Toilet Ring or Potty Chair?

Which have you found works better, toilet ring or potty chair?  We just started potty training and LO seems to find the potty chair a little easier to get on and off of, etc., but she will pick it up occasionally and toss it around... not sure if I should take it out of the equation for now and just do the ring?

Re: Toilet Ring or Potty Chair?

  • We found the potty ring to be more "convenient", so that is what we trained him on. He seemed to do better with that anyway. We did try both in the beginning but the potty ring won. :-)

We plan to do the same with DS2.

  • I used the potty chair first and once she was pretty good switched to potty seat. If you don't like having to clean up poop tho you might want to avoid the potty chair haha. I think not having the barrier of climbing up and holding on & stuff in the beginning was helpful for us & then when she had mastered actually going on something she could then take on the whole climb up & hold on thing, but every kid is different.
  • We used both for DD1. First the little potty, then the ring, then just the regular toilet with no ring.

We're using the ring more with DD2 right off the bat. We just keep it on one of the upstairs toilets. It's easier to clean, she can just flush instead of me having to empty and clean out/disinfect the bowl, and she's one step closer to using the toilet sans ring. I just lift her on and off, because she's too little to get up there by herself.

DD1 liked to spend a lot of time just sitting on the pot with books, though, so the little potty was cushier and closer to the ground so she didn't have to get up to grab another book. DD2 gets on, does her thing, then wants off, so the ring is fine.

  • We have both. But I prefer the potty chair for early potty training. I liked that I was able to set it in the middle of the room as to make it the focus. I love that I can carry it to any room in the house. For now we only use the big potty if we are closer to it than the potty chair.

  • We never used a little potty, mostly because I didn't want to have to clean it out every time she used it. She loves the potty ring, it gives her enough stability to do her thing without much help except getting on/off, which I think she'll be able to do on her own with a stool in another few months. It's also easy enough to take when we travel to visit family, I just tie it up in a grocery bag and toss it in the trunk.

  • We have always used a ring. Ds has a stool he uses to get on and off and when he stands.

  • We're using a ring. Right now we just lift him onto it since we don't have a stool or anything. He loves it. Hah.
  • We have both. She uses both. The house we are living in currently doesn't have a first floor bathroom so we keep a chair downstairs. But upstairs in the bathroom she always uses a ring. I prefer it - less clean up.

  • We are using the ring as well.  I'm way to busy/lazy/grossed out to use a potty seat.  We've found the ring to work well because DS likes putting it on the potty and it makes the hole the right size.  Plus, it makes the whole experience more "real" if that make sense because he's using the same potty as the adults.

  • We have both, but DS will only use the ring.

  • We used the toilet ring for DS. He was fine getting on and off, first with help, then on his own. I didn't want to have to clean a potty chair as well as regular toilets. We'll do the same with DD.

  • We started with the potty chair, then went to the ring, then I found the seats with the built in child seat - they are great :) The potty ring was such a PITA to deal with (icky, where to put it when it's not being used) ours is by Bemis, Kohler makes them too. You can find them on Amazon or Home Depot.
