Nursery colors for gender neutral

Hello ladies! I need your opinions about some colors for our nursery.  I am 17 weeks along with our first and we are not going to find out the sex of the baby so we are trying to create a very gender neutral (without being boring) nursery!  So far I have a teal color picked out for the walls and we are thinking of getting a Jenny Lind crib and painting it yellow but I am worried that will make the room look too feminine...what do you all think?  I know if we ended up having a boy we could bring boy related bedding in (since I am not going to do a whole matching set), etc. but still wanted some other opinions.  Thanks in advance!

Re: Nursery colors for gender neutral

  • I don't think what you explained has to be feminine.

This bedding goes well with teal walls, and is gender neatral. Maybe you could paint the crib the lime green instead?

My DH and I painted our DD (team green) room two shades of green with a chair rail to divide the colors. We bought a dark walnut furniture set and it looked great. When she was born we went with a garden theme so the green tied in with the leaves and the flowers. Now that we are team green again and this baby will be taking that room, we can go either way again.

  • I like those colors - I would go a bit brighter on the colors since for some reason in my head that makes them more gender neutral.  Possibly because I'm in the middle of brainstorming for our nursery and avoiding pastels like the plague!

I like the fun bright colors you have chosen -- if you have a boy I'd add some orange accents.

ETA: if you had a girl I'd add white accents.

  • Oh I hear ya on that!  I am trying to stay away from the "normal" baby room colors big time and do something different which is where we got the idea to paint the crib in the first place.
  • I think gray goes well with yellow and could make it look more "boyish" if your worried that the yellow crib with be too feminine. There are two great bedding sets from PBK and LON that are gray and yellow that would be perfect for a gender neutral room.

  • I think you can definitely have that be masculine! We're doing lavender. It's painted already (just yesterday) and decided we will find out the sex. If it's a girl I'll be bringing in pink accents and if it's a boy I''ll bring in aqua.

  • I think your colors could go either direction based on the accent colors you choose once LO arrives.

I love teal and yellow - but I'm partial :)

We were team green (and are for this LO, too). Our 'inspiration' was this receiving blanket:

And this is what we ended up with:

When DS was born and he was a boy, we did add some navy blue accents, but it basically still looks the same (only with a mobile we made over the crib). We are making a new room for him and re-using this nursery. If it's a girl, we'll add purple instead of navy.

  • Our colors are aqua, coral, beige and orange, with some ocean and beach themed artwork. While we are having a girl, I think I'd just as easily stick a boy in it, especially with the aqua walls.

  • I think teal and yellow are a great combination for a gender neutral room, but I highly recommend against painting the crib, or at a minimum avoid painting the top rails.  Babies/toddlers tend to chew on the top rails, ours has bite marks all over it, just something to think about.   But, you could use yellow elsewhere, for instance painting the dresser and changing table.

This sounds like my DD's nursery.  We painted the walls light grey and accented with aqua, coral and lavender.  We also did an elephant and lotus flower theme.  I painted the changing table aqua, her dresser greyish purple, and have a white jenny lind with coral and white striped bedding.  I love it.  I have no idea what I plan on doing for this LO's nursery..

  • Our nursery right now is also very gender-neutral, but we will be finding out the sex. You accent colors could be yellow and teal if you have a neutral base too. For example, our furniture is a neutral white and dark brown, but be have pops of teal and orange. Also, I don't know how safe paint is on cribs as I've heard that it can chip off if baby is teething on the railing...
