Pumping ? For those nursing fulltime

Yesterday I broke out my pump for the first time and got 1oz total just after DS's morning feed. Same thing this morning.

I'm basically just wondering if this a normal amount? Or am I not really using the pump effectively?

This is for the sole purpose of building up a small stash so dh and I can leave him with a grandparent for date nights. so it's not like I need to prepare a ton.

  • It seems normal since it sounds like you pumped just after feeding him. Try waiting a little bit after nursing to pump and you will likely get more. Also, if you get into the habit of pumping once a day, it will increase your supply and you should start to get more. GL!

  • I started with 2 oz after the morning feeding when I first started pumping everyday. Today I pumped 7 oz. It will increase slowly as you demand it too. The more you pump, the more your body will respomd.

I'm pumping to build up a stash for when I go back to work full time. I did this with DS too. My supply tanked around 6 months and I never had to supplement with formla since I had been pumping since he was 2 weeks old...

  • That sounds normal.  When you pump between feedings you generally don't get as much than if you were to pump to replace a feeding.  When I would pump between feedings on maternity leave I would only be able to pump 1-2oz.  When I pump at work to replace feedings, so far I can pump 4-5oz per session.  How long did you pump for?

Is your baby nursing both sides?  My LO fell into the habit of nursing one side only during the day.  So in the morning I'd pump the alternate side.  I can get anywhere from 2-4oz in the morning.  When we give him 1 bottle a day in the evening I pump, and get 3oz.  Again, that is pumping from a breast that has NOT been nursed in a couple hours, not a boob that he finished eating from.

Yes he's still nursing on both sides most of the time, although I intend to take advantage of those times he doesn't

  • I don't know what kind of pump you have but it could be your pump too...if I use my electric pump I barely get anything, whereas if I use my manual pump I can get 3-5oz in about 20min

  • I pump *before* feeding, and then I get a lot more. If I wait til after I get significantly less.

  • I am pumping for the same reason and had trouble in the beginning too.

This sounds silly but did you try putting the pump up to the highest setting?  This has helped me tons.

Otherwise I wasn't getting much either in the beginning.  I now pump once he is put down for his longer morning nap and a little after he goes down for the night.

  • This is normal.  As you cont to pump you will get more.  I am finding that if I pump in the early am when Gavin is sleeping get btwn 3-4oz. Cont to pump and will get more, I swear.
