Babies: 9 - 12 Months

LO holding own bottle?

Mine shows zero interest in propping his own bottle; however, anything else, he is anxious to grab/tear down/hold. I can't recall when my other LOs were doing this but feel like they were able to by 9 mo...

Any tips on getting him to hold it himself? Or is it just another one of those things he'll get with time?

TIA

  • DD1 held her own bottle once in the 14 months she took a bottle. DD2 has never held her own (she's tiny and I think the bottle is just too cumbersome for her little hands). I don't do anything to encourage them to hold their own bottles, I just enjoy the cuddle time because it's the only time my baby will hold even remotely still! I figure as long as she can hold her own sippy cup (which she uses quite well) I'm not worried.

  • My LO just started on his own one day.  He was a little over 9 months and all of a sudden he just had no desire in letting me hold it for him.  I think that every baby will do things in their own time.  I would not rush the growing up...:-)

  • Our LO has no desire, however I recently started halfway through the feeding showing him where to put his hands and he will hold it for a few minutes and then gets bored and lets it fall. We're working on transitioning to a sippy cup and he's doing well with that so I'm not too concerned with the bottle

  • LO holds cups and glasses and it doesn't occur to me to have LO hold her own bottle.  When she was young (LOL) she reached up and held it a few times for a few moments.  I hope to be done with the bottle in a month, so if she wants to hold it before then fine, otherwise no biggy.

  • LO has been holding his own bottle while lying back in his boppy since 3 months. However, I can't get him to use a sippy cup.

  • mine doesn't at all and shows no interest in doing it.

He does however use  sippy and straw cups just fine (when he's not chucking them across the room).

Why the heck did you put (jealous?!) in your post?  That is dumb.  Every baby goes at their own pace.  This isn't a competition.  Confused

  • Mine held his own at 8 months, but it was daycare that did it not me. He doesn't understand to tilt it back so they lay all the kids back on a boppy to do it. Will admit it is super cute becuase when he sees a empty bottle on the counter he grabs it and attempts to drink from it (we don't use a bottles at home). What is not so cute, is that he always attempted to do this with my husband's beer the other day. Embarrassed

  • DD has been holding hers since she was 4 months.  I guess they all do it at different stages.  She does better with some bottles compared to others too, like she has trouble with the 8 oz nursers (we used on vacation, but always give 4 oz bottles otherwise).  I shamefully but happily admit I like it because I can use my hands every once in a while now!

  • We use the Nuk bottles and DS could hold his own bottle pretty well by 4 months and all on his own at 5-6 months (I can't remember, it was a while ago). The bottle is short and fat. Easy for small hands to hold.

His little friend at daycare is exactly the same age and he holds his bottle all day long at daycare (and did it before my son did) but wouldn't do it at home. When his dad busted him one afternoon, they just put him in his high chair at home with his bottle and "walked away". He picked it right up :)

It might be that he just wants you to snuggle him.
