Chores

My 4yo has expressed interest in a chore chart and allowance. What types of chores do you think are appropriate and of what frequency?  She's incredibly capable- she can sort, fold and put away laundry and empty the dishwasher of everything she can reach to put away. She loves to vacuum too. I'm not terribly particular about her room clean every day. I want her to learn a little responsibility since she's showing interest. Im not terribly concerned with her actually being useful at this point, but i think having jobs around the house help build self esteem as well as responsibility.  She has no concept of money yet so figure she could earn a dollar a week for her piggy bank. Thoughts?  Experiences?

We have a star chart and DS can earn 1-2 stars depending on what he does.  It's more of a positive motivation thing.  Once he gets so many stars he gets a prize it could be going for ice cream or to Grandma's to swim.

We have him pick up his toys in the living room/his own room before nap and before bed.  He brushes his own teeth and takes his own dirty clothes to the laundry room.

We also have a chalkboard wall that he cleans himself and he loves to wipe down counters/the table.

  • We have the Melissa and Doug magnetic responsibility chart for dd and she loves it. No matter how many she checks off, she gets $3 a week for allowance. $0.50 goes into a donation jar to buy a toy at Christmas to donate. $1.25 goes into her piggy bank for long term savings, and the other $1.25 goes into her spernding jar.

  • We don't really do "chores" per se, but DD LOVES to set the table, so I give her that job.  I do plates and glasses, she does silverware and napkins.  She likes to give the cat water too.  I think we will start on making her bed and putting away her laundry soon.  I do the laundry after she's in bed most of the time now, but I may start leaving it out on her dresser for her to put away.

ETA - I don't think we are anywhere near ready for an allowance, if anything I'd do a quarter.  We will probably start allowance when she's 5ish/kindergarten age.
