Babywearing while Pregnant ?

I haven't worn DD since being pregnant again.  The only carrier we have is a linen ring sling and the only hold I am familiar with is the hip carry.

Would it be okay to use that?  Is it just personal preference?  Is there a hold that may work better with my bump?

DD is 20mos and 23.5lbs.

  • I used my beco gemni with DD until I was around 15 weeks along.  She was 25 pounds and I did the hip or back carry.  She was never a fan of the back carry and once I really started to show the hip carry got uncomfortable.

  • I used a mei tai throughout my pregnancy, with my daughter on my back. I also used my ring sling at nap time, to walk her to sleep. I would put her in a hip carry with her front leg draped over my belly. Pretty sure my neighbors thought I was nuts.

  • I wear my son several times per week (I am not up to every day anymore). He's 18 mo and I am 35w PG. We do back carries in a woven. Hip carries hurt my back (always have, even not PG), but if it works for you--great! There is no harm in giving it a try unless you have a known health issue. For me, it is great practice in building up my strength for tandem wearing as needed once #2 is here.
  • I don't see why it wouldn't be okay.  I still wear DD (21 months, 22ish lbs) in our Beco Gemeni mostly in a back carry, but also on the front just situated a little lower.

I'm mostly concerned about comfort.  I'm sure it's safe.

  • I preferred back carries while pregnant. It was kind of nice, like it balanced me out with weight on the front and back. :) I used an Ergo, then moved to a Boba, and occasionally a mei tai.

  • I wore my first until around 22w preggo with my second, but it started to hurt too much after that (he was 2 1/2 and 30lbs)-I'm sure he would have let me wear him until he maxed out the weight limit though, he loved it.  My second and third didn't like being worn after 18mo or so, so it was a non issue while pregnant with my third and fourth since I got pg right around 18mo both times.  This time I plan on wearing my fourth for as long as it's comfortable or she wants to.  She's 18mo and really only likes to be worn while nursing (which I'll continue through the pregnancy as I have before), and other than that she prefers to be in the cart or walking.

  • I think it is your personal comfort.  I am 32 weeks along and I have used my Boba3G for back carries and I have also done front, hip, and back carries with my Gira.  The front has her sitting really high, but she thinks it is funny.  My daughter is 16 months and 24 pounds.

  • Paxbaby has tons of input on this subject. She has 6 kids so it seems like she's always pregnant. Back carries for sure but she also does hip and front carries with a bump. Check it out.

  • I wore DS (~28lbs) in my RS on my hip and on my back for most of my pregnancy for quick carries, shorter trips. I used the MT for longer trips and was completely comfortable.

  • I preschooler wear, and I'm pregnant. :) DS is 3yr 3mo and 32ish lb.

For back carries, just tie/buckle high than your bump. I've always like super high back carries anyway, so no biggie now. I also did hip carries in a RS until 20some weeks. Just carry DC high and drap his from leg over the top of your bump. I haven't done a hip carry for several weeks. The occasion just hasn't arisen lately. I dO carry him often in my arms, and the position is very similar to a hip carry, so I think it would still be doable. I'm 31w4d.
