Goopy eyes?

My LO has had goopy eyes for the past day or 2.  When he wakes up they are very goopy and I wipe them off with warm washclothes but does anyone else have this??  I assume it is normal and I am going to call the doctor tomorrow but just wondering if anyone here is experiencing this?

Re: Goopy eyes?

  • My lo had green goop in one eye that would get crusty. Google lead me to believe it was a clogged tear duct and all I had to do was wipe his eye with a moist warm cloth and massage from the corner of his eye down the side of his nose. I did that with every feeding and it was completely gone in 2 days.

  • My LO has had one watery/goopy eye since he was a couple days old; the pedi said it's probably a clogged tear duct as the PP said.  I've been wiping it & massaging towards the side of his nose but it's still going...if it doesn't go away in another week or so I'm going to call the pedi, but I'm hoping it will resolve by then.

PS...If you're BF'ing, I've also heard that squirting a little breast milk in the eye will help but I haven't tried it myself yet.

  • Yep breastmilk in the eye - both of my kids have had this problem.

  • At our two week check I was concerned because DS still had a gross eye. My other son's cleared up in a few days. He's still got it but the doctor said it's just a clogged tear duct. As long as the eyeball is white it's probably the same thing. I've been doing breastmilk and a wam washcloth for a few days and it's still gross.

  • A lot of times babies will have blocked tear ducts which causes the goopiness. I have always done just what everyone else is saying...use warm compresses to clean it off and help to loosen up what is stuck inside. It will work itself out and is nothing to worry about...

This exactly. DD had this and by putting a warm washcloth on it then massaging the side of her eye by her nose it was cleared up in 2 wks. Good luck
