Swimming after birth w/ stitches?

Does anyone know how long I should wait to go swimming? I had a vaginal birth but had a 2nd degree tear and stitches.

They didn't tell me anything at the hospital. Just wondering if you have recieved any advice?

TYIA!

Re: Swimming after birth w/ stitches?

  • Personally I would wait until I got the all clear at 6 weeks post partum, but I dont know if there's any hard and fast rules about it.

  • I have been waiting until after my 6 week appointment for clearance. Its this Monday. I also wouldn't go in if you are still bleeding. JMO.

  • It'd be wise to wait until you're okayed at your 6wk appointment. Since you're not supposed to have a bath, I would also assume it'd not the most wise to go swimming. I think that they'd be concerned of your stitches dissolving too quickly and not healing properly, as well as risk of infection at that time.

  • I was actually told that baths are a good way to heal a tear.  My concern about a public pool would be germs (if you still have unhealed wounds/bleeding).  I think that swimming itself would probably be fine for that kind of injury because it is low impact, but I am unsure about the public water situation.  Let me know what your doctor says-- I need to start exercising too :)

My doc says baths are okay also. But the nurse who discharged me at the hospital said not all docs okay baths for their patients.

  • uggh! I wanna go swimming too :(  It became worse watching the Olympic trials last week LOL... I'm waiting for the all clear at my 6 week appointment.  I can't wait although not sure how I'm going to swim when I gotta look after the LO :)

  • I'd wait until your 6 week checkup too but that just me.
  • Call your Dr. and ask. I went swimming three weeks after my son's birth at a private pool with my Midwives approval . I also had a second degree tear. The water felt great and did not cause any issues or infections. I would be a little more hesitant to swim in a public pool though. Hope you can cool off and enjoy the water!
