O.M.G growth spurt?

So my LO has been sleeping from 8-8:30am to 5:30am with one feeding bt 1-2am since he was 2 months old with the help of sleep training rec by the pedi. Then last week he slept from 8pm-5:30am for 5 days straight!! Now, the last 3 days he has been up every 2 hrs, fussy and cranky like a little monster and fights like a beast to take a nap. Im hoping this is the 3mo growth spurt i hear about and that it doesnt last much longer bc im going nuts!!

When people say, "this too shall pass", it unfortunately applies to the good things as well as the bad!

So when we went to our 2 mo appt the pedi said that at that age, LO's should be sleeping 6-8hr stretches with 1 feeding in betwee. By 4 mo, LO's should be sleeping 10-12 hr stretches with no feedings in between. I know alot of moms dont believe in the CIO method, and believe me i wasnt a fan either (my husband was), but she said we need to start a routine. So this is what we do:

    1. If its nice out, we go for a walk from 6-7/7:30pm

    2. Bt 7:15-7:30pm its bath time. Using soap every other day and always lotion. Put his pj's on and tell him "we are getting ready for bedtime"

    3. Last feeding before bed. Sit in a low lit area so they know its time to go to sleep.

    4. Say goodnight to everyone (our dog, cat, daddy etc.). Put him in his crib and tell him we love him, its bedtime and we will see him in the morning. I have a sleep sheep that i put on ocean sounds and a battery operated mobile with projector that plays lullabys.

Then we just walk out of the room. He sometimes goes to bed by chewing his hands and cooing. He sometimes cries :( He will only cry bt 5-30 mins but not constant and its not usually that hard cry. If he is crying for more than 8-10 mins at a time i go in and give him his pacifier but the pedi said dont talk to him at that time and just be in and out quickly. It has worked great since day one. She said by 4 mos take away that middle of the night feeding and just let him cry himself back to sleep. He started sleeping on his own through the night last week until 3 days ago. Im hoping its a spurt and will go away soon. I also know they change sleep patterns but wish that sttn would come back soon!

  • CIO is very controversial on this board, but my pedi suggested a form of it yesterday too. We are having serious nap issues and still have 2 middle of the night feedings.

Be prepared you may get some flames from the girls here for using CIO this early. But according to my pedi, crying for 15 - 20 minutes at this age is not going to hurt the baby (or make them feel abandoned) and in fact they will learn to put themselves to sleep.

I'm undecided if I'm ready to try something like that yet.

Yes i understand some ppl dont agree with the CIO method and again i wasnt a fan either but it has worked so far. Also i must add again, if he cries for more than 10 mins at a time i go in and give him his paci, rub his belly and he is asleep. Even tho the pedi said not to have much contact, i cant do that. The dr said it cant harm them and he is one happy baby otherwise. People are entitled to their opinions but also dont feel i should be judged either. I think im a good mom.

Three nights in a row, LO slept through her usual 4-5am feeding, all the way until 7am (she goes to bed around 9pm). And then, last night happened. She woke every 2 hours to nurse! I was thinking, what is this, a reversion to newborn? I'm dragging today! Thank God it's my day to stay home with her and not work.

I'm sure you are a good mom! And I'd be willing to bet many more people on this board use CIO (or a form of it) than will admit it. It's one of those unpopular opinions that everyone got very bandwagonny about. I'm not saying I'm pro-CIO, I'm undecided. I think moms get too judgy of each other. I'm sure you're doing a fine job.
