When to buy diapers?

I am a bit post happy today, maybe it is my way of nesting without being able to get up and go do clean and shop, lol. When did you ladies start buying diapers? I can see waiting to buy them until you know of allergies and what not for baby, but I also want to be stocked given that they are about $30 a box.

  • I haven't bought diapers, but we did diaper raffles so I have like 8 packs of diapers ranging from size newborn all the way to size 3!! And, all different brands! :)

If you haven't had a baby shower, maybe you should think about doing that! It's where every guest to your baby shower that brings a pack of diapers gets their name put in for a cool gift!

  • With DS#1 I started buying right away to get good deals.  Ideally, you want to spend less than $0.20 per diaper (I aimed for $0.13).  If you get too many of a size or you buy Pampers and your LO can't use them you can exchange any unopened packages for another size or brand.

  • A couple weeks ago, I bought 60 diapers in NB (enough for 6-10 days), and one pack of size 1 and one pack of size 2 (the 2's were on sale). I know what brand I want, since I've got the other kids. I just haven't opened any of them yet, so they keep that nice smell in them.

  • I'd buy a pack of NB and a pack of size 1's to start.

You can by the rest when LO gets here and you see what works, what size you like, etc.

Sometimes they are in NB for weeks, sometimes days.  Same with various sizes.  My son was in size 2 for a very little time, but then in size 4 for what seemed like forever.

I usually just order on amazon or diapers.com.

  • I haven't bought any diapers yet, however my MIL (who works at a food bank) grabs a bag of them everytime they come in so she's got a stock pile of them.  I have NO clue on the sizes or quantity but we will be there next week so I will be able to take inventory to see what I need!
  • One of the moms at my work suggested buying smaller sized diapers instead of the big ol value box types.  That way if LO outgrows them you can return the unopened boxes for a bigger size.  Once they are open, you have to use them.  Places like Wal Mart will let you return them without a receipt.  Might be worth thinking about as you start stocking up.

Wow, how did you manage this great per diaper pricing?  I don't think we've ever gotten that good of a deal, even with coupons and sales.

  • I already have 4 boxes, 1 newborn, 1 size 1 and 2 sized 1-2.

BRU has a good sale right now with a BRU coupon and manufactures coupon plus Amazon has subscribe and save.  Personally I found that the Target & CVS brands were the best for DD.

  • We haven't bought any! My husband had a diaper party and we got a TON of diapers! Newborn to size 3. I would say just buy some newborns and size 1 :-)

  • I'm buying a small pack of newborn and a small box of size 1's before she is here.

I'll start with Pampers Swaddlers (sensitive) since that's what worked best for us with DS (Huggies he leaked out of, it really depends on the baby's build).  DS came home and was in size 1's immediately, so that's why I don't want to go all out with newborn (not to mention some hospitals just fold the size 1's down and skip the newborn size altogether).  Then he flew through the early sizes until he was mobile and his weight slowed down, so that's why I don't want to get bigger boxes until I see how fast she grows. I had a lot of unfinished boxes when we went with the larger economy sized boxes.

DH can always run out and buy more of whatever when we need them (and he'll probably make quite a few trips to the store in the first week or so...he did last time).

Also, our hospital sent plenty home to get us started.  But yeah, I wouldn't go all out and buy too many at first, until you see what works for you.

Ummm...Please tell me your MIL isn't taking diapers from the food bank which are meant for people in need??? I assume the workers at the food bank are not supposed to be taking them for their grandchildren....

  • We're waiting to buy any since we're not sure if we'll need preemie diapers or not. We'll just use what the hospital gives us while we're there and I'll send DF out to buy a box or two while we're still in there.

I do not know this poster or her situation, but I do know that there are places that operate on a co-op basis where people who work a certain number of hours a week are entitled to take a bag of food or goods in exchange for their services. I would guess this is the situation or that there is some other explanation beyond MIL "stealing" diapers.

I briefly wondered about this, but also remembered a friend of mine volunteered at a food bank and often times they had an over abundance of certain items and if it wasn't taken by staff / volunteers it would take up space for other items that came in.  I got things from her several times that they needed to get rid of.

Among those things were Borba Skin Care Water by the case and Cuties soy ice cream sandwiches -- people just weren't taking them.  I also once got an entire case of apples and made applesauce, apple crisps and pies out of them because they would've gone bad had they stayed at the food bank.

I'm imagining it's a similar situation for her MIL and she wouldn't just go taking things that others in need could use.

  • I bought a small package of newborn Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive. There are 30 in the pack, so I figure that's 2-3 days of diapers. Both other kids were 8 lbs so I imagine I will use them, if only for a couple days before I can get a package of size 1s.

  • We knew we weren't going to have a big baby (OB estimated 7lbs - we ended up with 6lbs 13.5oz) so we bought 2 boxes of newborn, 1 box of size 1, and 1 box of size 2. Then lots of wipes/refills. The reason we bought the bigger sizes is for when LO is ready to move up in size, then we wouldn't have that moment of "oh crap" and we'd have a box on hand.

  • I bought them when they were on sale.

I would shop around and see how much they are,  NB size I have 3 packs as they go up to 5 lbs -10 lbs.  Usually you use 10 diapers a day and there is  36 so 3.5 days a pack - so I have enough for about 10-12 days give or take.

size 1's I bought a box as it was on sale at Walmart - was 230 for like $30 regulary $45.  But look around I find some stores are cheaper and have "specials"  when you can get discount coupons from manufacters.

  • My daughter uses the Target brand diapers and I think they are great.  They are a good deal cheaper than the name brands and she never has leaks.  She had allergic reactions to Pampers and Huggies leaked.  I was going to get a few packs of NB because a pack of NB diapers has 36 diapers, and newborns go through about 12 changes a day.  A pack of NB diapers are only going to last 3 days anyway.  My daughter was really average sized (7lbs 6 oz, 20 3/4in long) though she grew really quickly she was in NB diapers for about 2 weeks. So 14 days x 12 diapers a day is still a lot of diapers!  I would say stock up on a few packs of NB and some size 1's in a few weeks, just save the receipt because if they did happen to have a reaction or grew at some crazy pace you can exchange it easily.  That's what I plan on doing at least!  Hope that helps some!

  • I bought one big box of NB and one big box of size one and figured I was good.

Then I got a bunch of NB, open  set, and some smaller size 1 at my shower.

My plan is to exchange up a size as needed.  But with enough NB to last a couple weeks and some size 1 in case baby doesn't stay in NB for very long, I feel like I'll be off to a good start.

  • Here is a link to Pampers size chart.  I have been stockpiling the 1's & 2s, and only have a small supply on newborn.

  • I'm a couponer and I bought them as great deals came about throughout my pregnancy.

So far I have jumbo packs as follows:

    Pampers NB - 4 packs

    Size 1 - 14 packs

    Size 2 - 4 packs

    Size 3 - 1 or 2 packs.

I've spent less than 10 cents per diaper... so I had to stock up.

Oh and I should add that I have 72 packs of pampers wipes (60-72ct) for absolutely free :)... actually I made money on some of them :)

  • I have a box of newborn, and a box of size ones. Since we used Pamper with DS, I figured odds were good we'd use them again. But I didn't want to stock up on too many in newborn size in case she's bigger than DS was.
