January 2012 Moms

Is anyone able to help me with any of the following?...

Not sure really where to post this, as I am a newbie here, but I was wondering if anyone might be able to help my best friend and I out with some stuff.

Heres my/our story: I am mom of a 6 month old DD and she is expecting her DD sometime in August. She will be a single mom and does not have much for her baby or much income. I have been trying to help her as much as I can by getting things together for her, but I myself am unemployed and my DH and I do not have much income and are struggling to make ends meet for us and our DD, so both of us at the same time have a need of baby items.

If anyone has diapers of any size, wipes, baby girl clothes (from preemie-18 months), bottles, and Similac Sensitive actuals or Similac Sensitive checks/coupons, or any other baby and baby girl items, and would love to help us, I can send you an email with my address that you can mail items to and it would be such a huge blessing to both of us and our baby girls!

If this wasn't the right area for me to post this in, I apologize, but I wasn't sure where would be better for me to put this. Thanks so much in advance!:)

Re: Is anyone able to help me with any of the following?...

  • Sometimes churches or charitable organizations set aside funds and resources for these kind of situations.  Have you tried contacting some in your area?

I need to talk to my husband first, but I do have some boxes of size 1 diapers that never got used because we use cloth diapers.  I'll get back to you once I talk to him.

hey thank you so much in advance:) I have gone to a charitable place in our area that works with churches but when I have gone there recently and also in the past, they never have my baby's kind of formula (Similac Sensitive), they only have regular Similac which she can't take (makes her gassy and colicky) and they are only able to give out 5 diapers per once a month visit, which is something but only covers half a day to maybe a day if you are lucky. They were also telling me they couldn't give me anything for my best friend without her being present and actually going there with me, and she is one of those thats pretty uncomfortable asking for help which is why I've never taken her:( We live in a semi-rural area and this is the main charitable organization affiliated with the churches in our area, I have asked around and there aren't really any others:( So, hopefully that answers your (and other posters) questions about that. I think if I lived in a bigger town/city there would be more resources available to help.
  • Have either of you looked into WIC? Also, if you go to Similac's website, you can sign up and they'll send you formula checks periodically.

My best friend is already on WIC (but she is going to EBF, so its just for her to be able to get enough groceries to nourish her and baby during the pregnancy and then during EBFing) so I am the only one in need of the formula, for my baby, but we are not eligible for WIC b/c my DH makes too much (I already talked to a caseworker and we do). We live in a VERY HCOL area with VERY low wages in comparison and have an awful debt to income ratio (long story there but thats the short of it). I had a great job before having my baby but due to a high risk pregnancy I lost it and haven't been able to find work since, especially since my DH works a rotating schedule, its near impossible to work around that and have to pay childcare costs etc (the job I had, I was going to be able to bring my baby with me, so that wouldn't have been an issue). So thats basically our situation:( Oh and as far as Similac sending me checks and coupons, they were doing that for a few months, then stopped, and every time I call them to talk to them about it they give me a hard time and I haven't gotten any from them in over 3 months:(

Oh and I was never able to BF, my DD came early and my milk never ever came in, for those of you who are wondering, so I have had to exclusively FF since birth...

    no judging here!

I so wish I'd have seen this a week ago. we had a ton of diapers we just gave away. :(  I'm not much help, sorry, but I do want to wish you and your friend the best of luck. You'll help each other through the tough times, and that really does make a difference. Make her sign up for the formula checks too and she can give them to you!!

namara5532, I saw that you are in NC as well, so depending on what part of NC you are in (I am also in NC) it might not be too much to mail them to me. But def let me know and thanks a bunch again!:)
  • Not to push you into anything you're not comfortable with, but if you and/or your friend have access to a washer, you could save a lot of money by using cloth diapers.  Buying prefolds is hella cheap, and some people really like them (we found them to be a bit tricky to use).  We got fuzzibunz and bumgenius one-size diapers (so they grow with baby), and will have spent just under $500 on diapers (with the exception of the backup disposables we keep on hand).  That's the total cost until she's using the potty.  We bought new, and it's possible to get a good stash for even less if you buy used.  It's true, our electric bill went up, but still not as much as it would have cost to use disposables.

    Just throwing it out there.

I wish I had extras to donate, but we're already handing down almost everything we have to friends.

    Good luck!

Yeah we did think about doing CDing but the problem with that is our electric bill is already sky high b/c we are home 24/7 (my DH works from home and I am always home too), so that would just add to it. And friends and family gave us a stash of sposies that lasted up til a few weeks ago and since then DD has been in Parents Choice brand to save money (which I did the math, the cost of that would only be around $20/month, so $400 give or take for two years in diapers). Problem now is we only have enough til the end of the week and then don't get another paycheck again til the end of the month:( This month is just a hard month for us...
  • Do you have a CVS drugstore in your area? I took a survey online and got a coupon for a free package of CVS diapers, but we don't have those drugstores here in Arkansas. If you do, I can mail you the coupon.

  • i have enfamil gentlease formula' i know its not the same but i have 9- 12.5 oz cans. you could also have your friend tell WIC that she wants to do formula and breast feeding and she can just give you the formula. i know it's kind of cheating the system but it will help a little.

It really doesn't add much to the electric, especially if you use a drying rack or line dry.  It's totally worth the savings.  You can even find some random brands for cheap on all the mama bargain websites (babysteals, mamabargains, greenbabybargains, babyhalfoff, totsy, zuilily, etc.).  Prefolds and waterproof covers are the ultimate way to save, though. $2/prefold-it's hard to beat that!

Also, if you don't get checks, get generic formula.  Half the price, same ingredients! Sunday papers almost always have a coupon for Huggies or Pampers.  Get coupons off neighbors/coworkers and go to a place where you can double them.  I know what it's like to have a tight budget, I feel for ya! I also FF, and not by choice!

Has everyone who has sent me a message been getting messages back from me in reply? I am still trying to navigate this site and am not sure if I'm sending messages correctly so please let me know! Thanks!:)
  • lrw327lrw327 member
Namara5532 have you been getting my messages? I've been trying to get in touch with you to give you my address if you are able to send the diapers, let me know. I am still trying to figure out the messaging system on here and not sure I'm doing it right! Thanks again!:)
  • Sorry, the bump doesn't make it easy to know you have a message or even how to check it. >.<;

Unfortunately, my husband had already promised those diapers to his stepsister who's due in a couple months.  I'm sorry I couldn't help.  Have you tried asking family and friends if they'd be willing to help you out?  You could also try posting on the North Carolina board to see if anyone there could give you a donation.

What do you mean by this? Like, anyone else here going to give me stuff? And someone offered to send you something and you responded with the fact they live in the same state so ts not too much to send something.

You sound ungrateful to those that actually are trying to help you.

I am NOT a scammer, I am a REAL person who is just going through a tough month, simple as that. I'm Liana, and my daughter's name is Erin. There, real enough for you? And we do Dave Ramsey already. We have cut back as much as we could. We saved up a lot of money to be able to have our baby and we planned to get pregnant, so it isn't like we just went and had a kid not being able to afford one. We are going through a hard month. If you want to know more I will gladly send you a private message and tell you. But how dare you call me a scammer!! Sorry that just makes me mad being accused of being one!

  • Since you live in a HCOL area, you should be able to find some stuff/deals at garage sales.  I'm sure if you explained to them your situation you could probably get a discount.

This.  You sound like a scammer.

Also if you make too much for wic why don't you consider budgeting your money so that you can afford diapers and such?  I live in a HCOL and am on WIC so I know what the income cut-offs are and if you really can't afford diapers then you should consider checking out Dave Ramsey's book to figure out where your money is going.

This. Believe me I get that babies are hard to really budget for, but why did you say that you did and that your pregnancy was planned? All the stuff that you have shared today contradicts that. So maybe you shouldn?t have told us that information, seeing how that could pretty much never be true for anyone IMO. Babies are expensive. This whole post screams SCAM when I read it.  I really hope the people that have offered things to you realize it now after all your ?I have a negative answer for everything as to why it will not work? comments. If they still do then they are suckers.  Another thing that screams scam artist about you is the fact that you just joined TB 3 days ago and you are already asking for a hand out. If your bills are too high, maybe you should get a job.

Agree with the above. I am all for helping our mommas in need but the second I started reading the post, I thought scam. A lot of the ladies gave you excellent advice on how to save money but you instantly shot those down and continued to pander. The "anyone else" comment sealed the deal for me. If you aren't a scammer than at the very least you are ungrateful. Neither of those things is going to get you anything from me.

seriously? I think you are taking advantage of good women and I'm not impressed.  Why is your electric bill too high to wash diapers? Cut TV, cut phones, don't turn on lights when you aren't using them- etc. Lots of people are barely making it, you do what you have to do.

I don't mind the initial asking, but this is freaking ridiculous and honestly it makes me angry.  These ladies have gone over and above to help many people and you just seem like you expect it- not cool.

  • I'll admit I jumped in to offer to help because I read your initial post as you asking for help for your friend.  I'm put off by the fact that you've since posted more about your own troubles than trying to help a friend also in dire straights.

Also, while I can understand you wanting to relate to us and to other boards, you're going about it the wrong way.  I mean to boast about your vaginal birth on the CS board?  That's just tasteless!  And the natural birth board is about having a NATURAL birth, meaning no meds.  You might have gotten a better response telling your story on the Birth Stories board; that's what it's for.

I won't sit here and call you names, but you need a reality check.  You need to accept the help you're offered, even when it's useful advice to help yourself instead of handouts.  You need to realize that rubbing your vaginal birth in the faces of those who didn't (and often couldn't) have one isn't a tactful conversation starter.  You need to learn how to offer encouragement only when you can actually say you've been there.  As much as I hate telling people to go away, you'd do best to learn how to be part of a community better, namely a different community.
