Hi All,
I'm just beginning to embark on trying to figure out day care in my area. I thought the easiest way was to join a mommy group near me and ask for recommendations. All of my other mommy friends live too far away and I really want to have a support system near my home. At this point I'm open to a nanny share, classical day care center, or an at home day care situation. I really just want a few recommendations for what is around me. This is my first child and well, I'm clueless. So clueless in fact that when looking around at mommy groups I feel just totally overwhelmed. Not to mention is cost $$ to join a group, so I don't want to make a mistake.
What have you all done or are doing to join groups and figure out day care?
Re: Day care, mommy groups....
You might try posting on your local board to ask for recommendations.

Ditto. Also check out your local Bump Board and/or see if there are any yahoo groups, listserves, or other mom websites for your area. What other connections do you have with people to ask: neighbors, church, coworkers (yours and DH), etc. IME most moms' groups are not the place to find out about daycare options because they are mostly SAHMs unless it is a group for working moms or one that meets at night.

We toured a few centers and spoke to a few people that we know that used the center we were ultimately interested in. I did find some online reviews on parent chat boards as well.
I hadn't thought about doing Mommy groups but since you suggested it I just googled "mommy and me" in my area. Meetup.com came up and I actually just signed up to join an over 35 Mommy group. The fee was only $5/year.
I don't know where you live, but you can check out "the Mommies Network."

The one in my area is really active (much more active than the Bump local board), and it's free. Lots of fun stuff (coffee mornings, play dates, book clubs, trivia night, etc) and lots of advice on the web forum re: area-specific day cares, parks, pediatricians.
My H and I both work FT so I went to the website for the daycare licensing agency in my state to get a list of local daycares that are licensed. It had information about infractions, etc. From there, I looked at what was near my house and inquired about costs/hours and then made an unscheduled visit (didn't want them to prepare for me!).
I haven't looked into mommy groups because I just don't have the time with my commute.
I'm an organizer of a group throught meetup.com.. if your in Northern NJ..
I also belong to a few others..
