Day care, mommy groups....

Hi All,

I'm just beginning to embark on trying to figure out day care in my area. I thought the easiest way was to join a mommy group near me and ask for recommendations. All of my other mommy friends live too far away and I really want to have a support system near my home. At this point I'm open to a nanny share, classical day care center, or an at home day care situation. I really just want a few recommendations for what is around me. This is my first child and well, I'm clueless. So clueless in fact that when looking around at mommy groups I feel just totally overwhelmed. Not to mention is cost $$ to join a group, so I don't want to make a mistake.

What have you all done or are doing to join groups and figure out day care?

Re: Day care, mommy groups....

  • You might try posting on your local board to ask for recommendations.

  • I would start touring centers, you will get a general feel for them and can often find reviews online from parents.

Ditto. Also check out your local Bump Board and/or see if there are any yahoo groups, listserves, or other mom websites for your area. What other connections do you have with people to ask: neighbors, church, coworkers (yours and DH), etc.  IME most moms' groups are not the place to find out about daycare options because they are mostly SAHMs unless it is a group for working moms or one that meets at night.

  • I have a good friend who's a pediatric nurse at a local children's doctor, so I asked her about the places near me (she works close by). She hears a lot of stuff from other moms. I don't know if it's feasible for you to ask a nurse at your pediatrician's office, but you might try.

  • We toured a few centers and spoke to a few people that we know that used the center we were ultimately interested in.  I did find some online reviews on parent chat boards as well.

I hadn't thought about doing Mommy groups but since you suggested it I just googled "mommy and me" in my area.  Meetup.com came up and I actually just signed up to join an over 35 Mommy group.  The fee was only $5/year.

  • I don't know where you live, but you can check out "the Mommies Network."

    https://www.themommiesnetwork.org/

The one in my area is really active (much more active than the Bump local board), and it's free. Lots of fun stuff (coffee mornings, play dates, book clubs, trivia night, etc) and lots of advice on the web forum re: area-specific day cares, parks, pediatricians.

  • My H and I both work FT so I went to the website for the daycare licensing agency in my state to get a list of local daycares that are licensed. It had information about infractions, etc. From there, I looked at what was near my house and inquired about costs/hours and then made an unscheduled visit (didn't want them to prepare for me!).

I haven't looked into mommy groups because I just don't have the time with my commute.

  • A mommy group might not be the best place to ask about daycare because most of them are SAHM. I know our county office has a listing of licensed daycare providers. You could see if you could get a list like that and try to ask around to see if anyone you know has any experience with certain ones. If not, then you'll have to start calling and visiting. Good luck!

  • As far as mom groups go, either use Meetup.com (the groups generally cost, but only $5/year from what I've seen) or ask around on facebook. Or look for new mom groups at birthing centers/hospitals.

  • I'm a member of MOMS Club International and I love it.  My area has a great group, about 25-40% participate in at least 1 monthly activity and it's $30 a year in my area to join.  We are mostly SAHM or WFHM with 2 working PT and 1 FT.

  • I'm an organizer of a group throught meetup.com.. if your in Northern NJ..

I also belong to a few others..

  • Look for support groups through your hospital or local library programs those are free ways to meet other mommy's.  Also meetup.com is a good place to find birth year groups and lots of times they cost only $5 or $10 a year.

  • We found out daycare by looking up places through a health department website. It lists centers than are licensed and you can pull their inspection history. It was a great search tool (and a way to weed out the places that were certifiably shady). Then we just toured centers until I got a good feeling about one.
