Natural Birth

ok, wrote it :) will you review my birth plan?

thanks for the kick in the pants ;)  I typed it up!  I kept it short and sweet.

We are looking forward to a low-intervention, medication-free birth, though our number one goal is a healthy mom and baby.

Other than medical staff the only individuals we would like present at the birth are my husband,Tyler, and my doula, Julie.

I would prefer a hep-lock instead of a continuous IV.I would like to walk around, use a birth ball, labor in the tub/shower, and try various positions for comfort measures during labor. Please only offer pain medications if I ask for them.I prefer intermittent monitoring to allow for as much mobility as possible. I prefer to have no episiotomy and risk tearing (unless baby is in distress).I would like the umbilical cord to stop pulsing before being clamped.I would like to have routine newborn procedures delayed until bonding and breastfeeding have occurred. My baby is to be exclusively breastfed.
In case of C-Section
I would like Tyler to be with me at all times in the OR.

  • Yes

Short, clear, no fluff. Good luck not needing it for a few more weeks!

  • I'm thinking about plagiarizing and using your birth plan as my own. I might would swap in my DH's name for yours. But really, I like how short and to the point it is. I am a very wordy and descriptive gal which is helpful when writing novels, but not so much for birth plans.

  • I think it is perfect!!

It sounds like you are also going into it with an open mind, which is great, because you never know what is going to happen in labor/delivery.

  • Where are you giving birth?  A lot of that stuff is pretty routine now...

  • The one comment I have is you may want to request a low transverse incision and double sutures in the event of a c/s. To make a VBAC more likely next time

And a request for immediate skin to skin in the OR. This made my c/s much better emotionally of me.

Pretty much this.   It's exactly what I would have written.

This was very similar to my first.  The only thing I would mention adding is asking them NOT to ask your level of pain.  I personally felt that would have been counterproductive.

This sounds like a Hypnobabies birth plan!  :)  It was VERY similar to mine!

  • Just so you know, your husband will probably NOT be with you when they initially take you back into the OR to get you draped and prepped. He will need to be changed into surgical scrubs, and put a mask and cap on anyway while you are getting set so he will be appropriate for the OR.

Also if your hospital is a  "baby friendly" hospital (is a certification) then the first hour of life should be spent skin-to-skin regardless of where your delivery takes place, as long as the baby and you are stable.

As for requesting what kind of uterine incision you want, you will most likely get the standard of care which is low transverse. Most people do double sutures. No one wants to risk rupture or issues in a subsequent pregnancy. That being said, if you are an emergency you will get the incisions you get to get your child outta there.
