FF - up 1 or 2 ounces?

When you increase LO's formula do you usually up it 1 or 2 ouncese at a time? L is at 4 (she's 11 weeks) and she consistently drinks the whole bottle and often mad when she's done. Six ounces seems like it may be too much of an increase since she has reflux. I figured I would just give her 5 and see how she does but just wondered what you ladies normally do? Thanks!

  • DS also has reflux and was constantly doing 4 every 1-2hours... Now we went to 6 about ever 2 hours or so... I went ahead and did 6 for a day or two to see if it was enough.. ocassionally he would only eat 5... and sometimes he will eat the full 6...

  • We usually go up about a half to 1 oz at a time, but my DD is still struggling to eat 5oz.

  • Legit question.  How do you up it 1oz if you're using powder?  Do you just add HALF a scoop?

On the enfamil scooper there is a line on it so it can measure 1oz pretty accurately. We started on similac and there was no line.

I just gave her 5oz and she seems content but finished it all with no problem.

  • I would up her an ounce. If its too much, increasing her spit up or she won't finish it, then just up her half an ounce. We are at 3.5oz every 2 hours. She takes 4 sometimes but if I give her 4 every feeding she spits up a lot.

  • I do half an oz at a time. He's currently at 4.5 oz MOST times, and sometimes if I notice he's seeming extra hungry or if its been more than 3 hours between, I'll do 5. Once he's consistantly on 5 and finishes them all and still seems like he could eat more, I'll do 5.5. I just hate wasting formula, so I do baby steps.. lol
  • My LO has reflux as well, and my pedi said to increase 1/2 at a time. That way you reduce the risk of vomiting.

Yep, I do half a scoop.

I'd increase by 1oz too.  I think it will be easier to monitor how much is really needed.  For LO, I still always make 4oz bottles and then just make more if she's still hungry.  Sometimes she wants 3oz, sometimes 8oz, so I often don't know exactly how much she'll want to eat (though, if she's just had 8oz, her next feeding usually isn't more than 4oz).

  • 1 ounces when we go up.  We're probably close to doing the 5 ounces/feeding by default move up too.  Right now, I still plan on 4 ounces, but more and more, he's taking an extra ounce.  Sometimes, but rarely, he won't even want the 4 ounces, but more often than not, I think he'd take 5.

ETA: We just scoop out about 1/2 scoop.  I figure it's all approximate anyway - sometimes my scoop is a little low (packed really well), sometimes it's a little high.  I figure it all evens out and isn't critical.

  • I go up half oz at a time. The boys are at 7 oz, 3.5-4 during the day and longer at night.
