1st Round of Injectables - Not sure what to expect

My insurance covers my injectables as long as we dont do any type or ART Procedure so we are trying follistim with timed intercourse this month. I have been through the shots before, I dontated my eggs a few times years ago, so that isnt what scares me, what I am worried about is it seemed like with Clomid I knew what to expect. Follicles, even if just a few, kept growing. I know injectables are their own art form, but when I had my u/s on day 7 I saw a BUNCH of small follicles, I thought that was bad. Then they dont give any "few" follicles room to grow?!?!? My nurse didnt seem concerned and told me to continue on the 100iu's. I know this is their job and they see tons of people like me but this is the first time I have gone through it for my own baby. The clomid was a constant roller coaster of emotion, I feel 10x better on the follistim and am keeping my hopes up but also realistic. I know this post doesnt say much nor does it really ask a certain question, but I am just kind of looking for what I am in for. I dont have any certain expectations because I just really dont know. I feel slightly lost, and I have maybe only told two people what we are doing, I think the stress of people knowing (and all the q's)  is harder than the stress of doing it. If that makes sense... So with all that rambing, just wondering if anyone has any advice.

I go back Friday for another u/s and lab work.

  • As questions at your appts! Ask if you should be concerned about all the small follies you see and anything else you think of.

You should be getting a few dominant follicles, but of course it is normal to have many smaller ones as well. The smaller ones dont take up all the room, ovaries can get as big as grapefruits during IVF cycles.

Oh and FWIW, IUI is not an ART procedure.

My insurance looks at it as one, they are all grouped under Assisted Reproductive. Its Federal Insurance, so its confusing already.... (: Thanks! I try to ask questions when I am there but I usually end up calling back after the fact.

Oh and FWIW, IUI is not an ART procedure.

I've spent DAYS on the phone with my insurance company, clinic AND perscription coverage and it absolutly prohibits the non-covered and covered "items" to be intermingled. They absolutly can view your records and the clinic will not do anything under the table (although they disagree with the insurance) it is pretty silly to spend all this money to go through something and not have the option to go through IUI and increase our chances, but since the injectables dont mess with your mucus and my husband checks out fine (and has 5x the normal sperm count with great % etc.) we are going to just do what we can. I have def done my homework and I am okay with the way things are going, its just so much to take in at one time. Thanks for all the information I really appreciate it.

This, and at the very least, you should be able to pay cash for the IUI and not process it through insurance at all. Insurance can tell you what they will pay for if you do something, but they cannot tell you that you can't do something and pay for it yourself.

Also, most insurance policies have completely separate companies/policies managing medical and drug coverage. For example, someone who has a normal employee health insurance coverage through their employer could have BC/BS to cover medical (u/s, blood work) and ExpressScripts to cover prescription drugs.

I have health insurance that covers 'the diagnosis and treatment of the underlying causes of infertility', but expressly forbids coverage of IUIs or IVF. However, they are covering all the monitoring u/s and bloodwork, with the exception of a cap on coverage for u/s to 2 in any 21 day period. Then our ExpressScripts policy is actually covering all the medications associated with all of our IUIs and now everything for our FET, even though our insurance won't pay for the procedures those drugs are for.

Check out the specific policy language and if all else fails, talk to your insurance specialist at your HR department.

  • DH and I have been TTC for 3 years now.  I have done 3 rounds of clomid (1st, my body didn't respond, 2nd, my body responded TOO well so that was canceled and the 3rd time, had a great response w/IUI, but BFN...bummer).  I had a lap in June to see if I had endo, which runs very strongly in my family.  I had two little spots, which they removed, but said wouldn't be enough to keep me from getting preggers.  So, we were officially diagnoised w/unexplained infertillity.  Yipee...

So, this is my first time w/follistim injections and ovidrel (sp).  I took my first shot on 7/3 and am going to trigger tomorrow (yey!).  It sounds like we're on a pretty close schedule, so I was wondering what point you are at now?
