We had DD's 4 month appointment today and everything was great. She is healthy and gaining weight appropriately, but the doctor started talking about solid food and I don't know what to make of it.
She told us that we could start giving LO juices and rice cereal now, and then start veggies at 5 months. First of all, everything I have read said that juices have no value for infants and to avoid giving them at all. I think the Canadian Paediatric Society says to exclusively breastfeed for 6 months and then avoid giving juices after that. I will not be giving her juice despite her telling us it was ok.
Then with solids, I thought it wasn't recommended to start until 6 months and I asked her this. She said that between 4-6 months is when it is recommended to start. Again this goes against what I have read. She is my DH's doctor and we went with her because he has been with her practically his whole life, but I am having doubts that she is up to date with information. Now I don't know whether to start solids before her next appointment. What do you think?
Re: Not sure what to think
Thanks for this link
Thanks!
I have read more information and it does seem that rice cereal is ok to start at 4 months. It's hard to know because there is so much information out there. Maybe it is better to look for the signs of readiness, and then start to introduce things. DD wouldn't be able to sit well in a high chair yet, so I don't think she is ready.
What I was told was that around 4 months to start on solids - you start by replacing ONE BOTTLE with a formula/rice mix to start teaching them to eat off a spoon. Then gradually start increasing the amount of solid food they get. I think this is acceptable.
Dr. told us when he starts moving his head away when he is full and can sit up is when it is good to start solids.
Hehe- Not like if we hold off until 6 months they won't master the spoon
I remember being in such a hurry with DD1. Now I want DD2 to stay this little. I love having a baby and we're not having any more, so I bet I hold her to a snail's pace on stuff like this
There have been some studies in the last few years pointing to early introduction of allergenic foods possibly lowering the chance for food allergies later in life. I'll give you the link to wholesomebabyfood.com where you can find the links to a few of the studies.

ETA some of them contradict the other, of course. Ultimately you just gotta go with your gut, ya know?
