Cutting LO's nails

How are you all doing this nowadays? I used to be able to be sneaky about it and do it while she was napping because she used to fall asleep on me and I would later transfer her to the crib, but now she falls asleep on her own in the crib most of the time. She will not hold still to let me do it while she's awake.

Re: Cutting LO's nails

  • These days, it is usually one at a time when I can get her to sit still long enough.  What this means is that by the time I get to the last one, time to start all over again.  Same with the toes.

  • I have a clipper with a little light on it, so sometimes I'll sneak in to his room and do it then.  However, last night I did it during bath time and he was fine with it.  It took awhile because he wanted to play with the "Toy" but it worked!
  • I used to cut his finger nails while he was sleeping on DH, but like you said, he sleeps in the crib now so that doesn't work. I just try to grab him in my lap and cut a couple at a time until he runs away.

For toenails, I do it while he's in the highchair. It's still tricky because he kicks, but he can't see what I'm doing and he can't run away, so that helps.

  • I usually take him outside and hold him on my lap. With one arm I hold his one arm down while holding the hand I am cutting, and then I use my other hand to cut his nails. It takes a lot of wrangling and fighting with him, but in the end it gets done safely!

  • I have to do it right before nap time when she is lazy and tired.

  • This is the only time I let her watch TV.  I can usually get most of them before she squirms away.
  • I put him in my lap and get him interested in a toy and do his toes first, then take it one finger at a time.  He's pretty cooperative though.

This, exactly.  By the end, he's furious, but it's done.  Argh.

Also, if it's anywhere near bath time, I'll give him a graham cracker in the opposite hand of the one that I'm cutting...makes it a bunch easier for the wrangling, not so much for the clean up.

  • I get both of my boys' nails clipped when Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is on.  Only time during the day they both sit still and will let me do it.

  • DS will sometimes fall asleep on my lap drinking his milk before bed so I cut them then. I keep the clippers on the counter where I can reach in case he falls asleep. Sometimes he'll sit still long enough to do both hands but usually only one hand lol and I get his toenails while he's in his highchair.

Same here, and I feel like I'm always getting scratched b/c of it!

This! DD gets about halfway through a pingu while I cut them.

  • I think the last time I'd been able to cut her nails while she was asleep was when she was 3 months or younger. She is a VERY light sleeper so I don't mess with her when she's asleep.

I cut them when she's awake, sitting on my lap and when she got too impatient to stay put until I'm done, I put on Baby Einstein. Once I'm done, TV is off. Works like a charm.

  • It's funny that so many people are sneaky about cutting fingernails! I've always done it when DD was awake...I never thought to do it when she was asleep. I can usually get through all of them at once, especially if she is distracted by DH talking to her. Maybe try something distracting...TV, music, another person, a musical toy??

Elmo you tube videos.  That's the only (safe) way we can do it.

  • I do a couple at a time throughout the day.  Occasionally I can get a whole hand done in one sitting.  He won't tolerate it if I try to do both hands.

  • Last time I cut DS nails he wanted to play with the clippers.  So we took turns and I talked about sharing.  He would play with them till he put them in his mouth.  Then, I would take them and cut a couple of fingers.  Then, he would take them and we continued this routine.  However, I don't think I got to all of them.  DS hates his toenails being clipped.  I like the idea while he is in high chair and will have to try that next time.
