2nd Trimester

Pregnancy constipation and digestion issues?

I'm wondering if any other expecting moms are going through this, I'm 18 weeks and 1 day and ever since week 10 I think, I've been having constipation problems. I'm not having a problem going, I go pretty much everyday but they are all (sorry for the TMI) painful bowel movements, sometimes bloody. I have been eating fiber, have been drinking tons of water and started taking Colace(as directed by my dr) but I don't take it everyday. It doesn't seem to help though. Is anyone out there going through this?

Re: Pregnancy constipation and digestion issues?

  • Pregnancy slows down your digestion big time, so this is a common problem.  I've been having it since week 6 and it SUCKS.  The only things I've found that works is drinking water until I feel like I need a lifeguard to move, stool softener twice a day every day without fail, and having a small regular coffee in the morning (coffee always gets things moving for me, though).

I was constipated all last pregnancy too.  YOu know the end where they say your body cleans itself out with loose stools before labor?  Yeah, NEVER happened to me.  I was so constipated when I went into labor still (hadn't gone in 6 days) that I was begging for an enema...and that helped.  I had ended up having to use a home one a couple of times just to survive the last few weeks.  I am really hoping it doesn't stay that way again.

  • yes very much so.. gotta eat well balanced diet and increase your fiber when possible.  Eat a few prunes a day, increase your fiberious veggies etc.  I can't take fiber pills cause they make me sick :(.

Ditto this.... be careful with the prunes though!  Could you possibly get up and go walking or some sort of exercise during the day? Say for 20 minutes? I know if I drink a ton of water and go for a 20 minute brisk walk, it loosens things up.

  • I feel ya sister! I didnt have this issue with my last pregnancy and sadly dd#1 gifted me with some incredible hemorrhoids which makes the difficult bowel movement even worse. I drink a lot of water , stay active, take one stool softener daily and eat a lot of prunes and fiber one and other high fiber foods and I'm still struggling. My OB said I could go off my prenatals awhile back so I also did that but you may want to get the okay from your dr first. I'm going to try fiber pills next and see if that helpsbut the last time I tried te fiber powder in water I got such bad stomach cramps that it wasn't even worth it! I think the key is doing EVERYThING at the same time to make some progress.

  • I have been having this problem since 11 weeks.  Now at 25 weeks, I have to take iron supplements and it is worse than ever.  I eat tons of fiber and drink lots or water, take colace and drink prune juice, but it is still rough.  I have had the worse issues with this even when I wasn't pregnant so it's nothing new to me.

  • I have irratable bowel syndrome which is bad, but being pregnant with IBS is just awful! I take a stool softener every day with my prenatals and eat fiber gummies in the morning. I try to eat extra fiber and lots of water. Oh the LOVELY side effects of pregnancy :)

  • I was having a problem with extremely painful bowel movements. I started taking a 1 dulcolax pill every night and it is MUCH better now. I highly reccomend it.

  • I can't find a happy balance either.  If I take my prenatal vitamins every day, I'm constipated and crampy.  If I take them every other day, I end up with diarrhea.  I can't win.
