Pre-School and Daycare

Pre-school screening Qs

Hello, I've never posted on this particular board, and I can safely say that I did not lurk to figure out if this question has been answered recently...forgive me. It just came to my head, and this seemed to be the board to ask.

Anyway, my DD is set to get a pre-school screening in a few weeks for a pre-k3 class. Can anyone enlighten me on what in the world goes on during a pre-school screening?

Re: Pre-school screening Qs

  • For a 3's class my guess would be that they will be gauging how she separates from you, responds to other adults, probably hand her a book upside down and/or backwards to see if she knows how to correctly align it to start reading (it's a pre-reading skill, they obviously don't expect her to actually read it), depending on their focus they may bring out the alphabet and some numbers to see how much she recognizes, can she pick thing out when asked, does she verbally tell them and point, just point to letters/numbers, pick them up and show them (helps them determine her knowledge base and evaluates her "maturity" and temperment, is she easily engaged, confident in showing her stuff or is she a little shy, needs some coaching to feel comfortable).  A lot of there focus will be on the opportunity to know what she needs, is she a kids that is coming is as a blank slate, knows a tiny bit, is right on par, knows a lot (academically speaking) and then is she a kid that's going to take some time to warm up, is she really outgoing, what is she confident about (they may observe her in some play, does she get exciting and confident in sharing her block tower but not her letters ect).

As much a it's hard not too, try not to stress or prep her for it.  I'd simply tell her the nice teacher are going to play with her for a little while and to have fun.  If you're stressed she'll pick up on it and be more likely to have a hard time.  Since you use the terms Pre-K3 I'm assuming this is public school, yes?  If so then they will be looking to evaluate her in order to place her with equal or relatively equal kids so the teachers are able to really focus on what those kids need.

  • js- thank you for your reply-- that helped. It's not a public school, this is a private Christian school that is just starting a pre-k3 program. I toured it today, and it is so very "school-like" that it is actually making me anxious. I guess I am having a hard time transitioning her from daycare. I am a teacher, and to just see her in "school" already is really crazy.

Anyway, I will take your advice and not prep her for it. She is very knowledgeable, and she is very outgoing, but I think if I try to prep her, she will definitely pull back.

    Thanks!

  • Our three year old screening was more just looking for delays. Hearing, vision, speech, sorting, small and fine motor, color... It was really no big deal, although DD wanted to play with all the new toys her way, and not theirs.
