Building a stash ?

Hi ladies,

I'm heading back to work Dec. 15 and I'm attempting to start a stash of pumped breastmilk.  Right now I have about 7 or 8 bags of 2-4oz and I usually pump once a day after my first morning feeding.  Should I start pumping more than once a day?  DD sometimes sleeps from 12-5 and my breast pads get quite full, should I try pumping before bed?  Also - did you find when your baby got older that you were able to pump more?  I usually get about 4 oz in 15 minutes of pumping now, just wondering if I'll get more when she starts taking bigger bottles at daycare.

TIA!

Re: Building a stash ?

  • I started building a stash about 6 weeks prior to going back to work.  I froze 1-2 bags of 4-5 oz a day.  Now that I am back at work, I really dont need to use the freezer stash because what I pump at work DD gets the next day.  I like having the stash though because DH always has milk if for some reason I cant pump enough at work.

  • I'm returning to work on the 16th, and I started to build a stash 2 weeks ago. ?I have about 3-4 days worth of BM for DS (5-6 oz bags with some 2-3 oz snack bags). ?I agree with pp, once you go back you probably won't even need bags from your frozen stash -- but they are nice to have in an emergency (i.e. you get sick and are on drugs that could harm DC, etc).

If you want to stash more; I would pump before you go to bed. ?I pump at 9 am after DS's breakfast and then at 10pm (about 2 hours after he goes to bed).

  • I had a lot of BFing and pumping issues with DS so I started pumping along with BFing as soon as DD was born. I have about 80oz frozen now. DS went through a HUGE growth spurt beginning at 3mos and that seemed to go on until he was close to a year. He ate so much and I went through my freezer stash quickly. DD is a lot bigger than DS was so I don't mind having some extra.

Below is a link another nestie posted on pumping and maintaining your supply. I've found it useful so far.

  • No need to spend time building a stash. When you go back you will pump enough for the next day and sometimes you will have extra. It's nice to have some in the freezer in case you are sick or whatever but don't go crazy over it. I have read about some people who have like a ridiculous amount frozen and for some reason or another never use it or it goes to waste. Why take time away from your baby to pump extra times or stay up later than you need to to pump? Just do what women have been doing for ages and feed what you need to feed. Don't stress over it. I have been working since my son was 6 months old and he's 10 months now and have never had a problem, it always works out.
