Crib in front of a window

So the longest flat wall space we have in our room is a wall with a sliding glass door which we actually dont at all use...we're considering putting the crib in front of it because its the best space for it to fit, but we live in earthquake territory and if we do that I'd want to make sure that glass wont end up in the crib...can anyone help me with an idea for that? I'm thinking very heavy draperies maybe taped or stapled to the sides and bottom of the door...

suggestions please!!

Re: Crib in front of a window

  • Yup, we keep our cribs away from windows. Mostly because of the curtains that I don't want them to pull on.

  • We have a one bedroom apartment and we had to completely rearrange our bedroom in order to be able to keep the crib away from the window! Quite a pain (it took forever and was awful, it's a small room so everything had to be moved out and then back in, took ALL day) but there just wasn't a way to otherwise avoid the window.

I'm not sure if there's a safe way to do it. Even stapling the drapes down would concern me because there would still be fabric to get at and babies find the strangest ways around things, but it would be preferable to just putting the crib in front of some unsecured drapes.

  • We have our crib in front of a large window...We also live in Europe so no earthquakes and the windows are much better than those in the States (no offense meant). We get no drafts and not too much noise (nothing that she wouldn't hear anywhere else in her room). DD's been in there a year and is doing great. We don't have any drapes up in our house and have great exterior blinds that back out the sun.

If you are concerned I'd see if you can find a different solution, maybe put the head of the crib on a wall and have it sticking out into the room like a normal bed?

  • Honestly, I'd ignore the fact that its the longest wall or the place the crib fits best. I'd put the crib in the safest spot in the room if you live in earthquake territory.

We wouldn't even put a crib near a window where we live and we're at least 3000 miles from any real earthquake zones. Any time there is a storm, high winds, high/low temperatures, etc. glass near a crib is not safe.

This would make me nervous for a variety of issues, but drafts come to mind first.

If you don't use the door and don't intend to do so, could you hire a contractor (or DIY) to close off the door?

Personally, I wouldn't do it. There's also a lot of drafts that come in through windows/doors, and a lot of noise. If you had drapes in front of it, the baby could pull of them when old enough.

We are actually going to put our crib in the center of the room (not against any wall) because of only having exterior walls and windows in the room.

    I agree with this..

someone recommended opening the door a crack and when you can see into the room this is the wall to put crib against - great idea for FTMs
