Recommend bottom of stairs gate

We really need a gate for the bottom of the stairs!  A is now obsessed with trying to climb up them and just goes right for the stairs when she sees them.  We have one at the top but there's a wall there so it's anchored to the wall.  I'm not really sure what to put at the bottom since there's no wall to anchor the gate to.  Any suggestions?  Preferably reasonably priced!

  • We have this gate at the bottom of our stairs: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4322419. But, after reading your post, I don't know how it would work with your stairs. Are there just banisters? We have a wall on one side and square banister on the other. I like that this gate closes on its own and you have to unlock it and pull up to be able to open it.

  • Thanks!  Yeah, it's banisters on both sides so I need something that can attach to them.  It seems harder to find than I initially thought!

  • We have these and LOVE them! We use them at the top and bottom. On the bottom one, since we didn't want to damage the banister, we pressure fitted it. It works fabulous.

  • We have a "retract a gate" for all of our stairs (we have a split level house so there are stairs everywhere).  First years and kiddie guard also make a version as well, this one, IMO is easiest to install and use.  With all of them you can purchase a "banister kit" so you can mount it to a banister (you would need two for both sides).  Not a cheap option, but I'm always worried that pressure gates will eventually wiggle loose.  It's also nice not to have the gates "up" when we don't need them to be.

  • Thanks! Mamabear that gate is awesome!  I'm on my phone but I'll check it out later since I can't find the price.

My cousin had the same problem.   Her DH  jury-rigged a gate.    He attached a 2x4 to each banister using a couple bungee cords.   Then they put a regular walkthrough gate up.   He drilled into the boards to secure the gate.

  • Our house is a 4 level split and twi of the staircases are banister- only at the top/bottom. We got a 3x.5inch piece of wood the height if the banister, stained it to match, zip tied it to the banisters and used hardware to attach the gates to it. I threw a fit about not wanting to drill holes in the posts and this way we can take them down (someday!) and sid not have to buy kits.

  • Ha- I wish we were that handy.  Is it bad the only tools we have are a couple screwdrivers and a hammer?
