Help!! Very gassy baby (also on 0-3 board)

I am in desperate need of help for my gassy baby. Lo has always seemed to have gas issues and would be fussy when she had to fart or poop but lately it has gotten a lot worse. She basically screams throughout her whole bottles because she is bearing down trying to fart and it causes her to choke and spit up (She is on zantac because we originally thought she had reflux but now I'm really not sure that is what it is). She has started eating less, she only does about 2 oz now when she was taking 3oz occasionally 4oz. The gas will wake her up from a dead sleep and she will start screaming in pain until she passes it, then she will usually fall back asleep. Last night was miserable for all of us, she was basically up screaming every hour and the only way I could get her to sleep a little was by putting her in bed next to me. I try and breastfeed whenever I can (I had breast reduction in 08 so I do not have a large supply and have to supplement with formula). She doesn't scream while breastfeeding and does not seem to be trying to pass gas while breastfeeding. It is heartbreaking as a mom because I see how much better she does with breast milk and I just cannot supply it with her full time. For formula we originally started her on Enfamil newborn but changed to the Gentleease once we noticed she seemed extra gassy. When the thought of reflux came up she was put on Enfamil A.R. but that made her miserable and constipated, so we went back to the gentleease. At first I thought the formula was maybe helping a bit but things just seem to get progressively worse. For example, screaming through bottles is new as of a few days ago. We burp her all the time and are using the Tommee Tippee sensative tummy bottles hoping that those decrease the amount of air she sucks in. I am at a loss and I can't watch my child suffer in pain anymore. I plan on calling her pedi today but I was just wondering if anyone on her had any advice. Thanks!

My DD is also very gassy.  She doesn't cry during feeding time, but wakes up screaming in pain and then I hear her farting.  We've been using gas drops.  I can't say they're helping; some days are definitely better than others.  I have tried gripe water a couple times, but both times she spit up right after, so I'm not sure I will continue.  I also try to give her time on her belly and rub her belly when she is crying.  We were using Playtex drop ins, but have switched to Dr. Brown's since they claim to help minimize this.  Honestly, I don't know if any of this is working, but some days it barely bothers her.  Other days are horrible.  Sorry you are going through this!

  • My first DS had gas issues like this. They thought reflux but it was the formula that was causing it. My pediatrician put us on Similac sensitive and told us to put 2-3 little tummies gas drops into the bottle when we mixed it. This pulled the gas bubbles out of the formula before it got into his system and made him burp faster during feedings which gave relief. We did this in every bottle until 5 or 6 months it worked like a charm. Obviously, ask your dr but it worked to alleviate the gas for my DS. I have done this for DS #2 when we supplement with formula and it has worked well for him as well. GL, I know how frustrating it is not to be able to help baby get over the discomfort. I hope you find something that works.

  • Fennel tea!! its a miracle! My sister is stationed in germany, and when he LO was around 2-3 months old she had a horrible spout of colic...  everyone in our family (that live in germany) and MY nurse manager at work all suggested fennel tea. If you are breast feeding, drink a couple of cups of fennel tea before you start the feed, or just through out the day. the taste isnt the most appealing, but you'll get used to it. If you arent breast feeding, and using formula, mix the formula with some brewed fennel tea! I'm telling you, its a miracle tea! Good luck hun!

Now that I have my own LO, I only mix her formula with fennel tea, and when I was BFing I was drinking strictly fennel tea... hot and cold...

  • DS is also a bit colicky and the advice from our pedi was that nothing really works very well other than baby wearing for some reason. So we just straped him on and hoped for the best, it seems to be working at the moment.
