Do you EC?

Talking to me about your experience ECing.  A friend of mine had a book on it, I read the back and the intro and I'm intrigued.  I can't do it all the time because I work during the school year, but I wondering if it's worth trying when I am home.  It seems people do it part time.  I currently CD exclusively and we love it!  I watched DD today and when she started making squinty faces at me and grunting I took her diaper off and popped her on our potty and sang her a song.  She pooped both times, right into the potty.  I was really impressed!  Two less poopy diapers for me to deal with, ya-hoo!  Any how, what is your experience?

Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

Re: Do you EC?

  • From what I've heard, most parents take it very casually. My approach for now is during naked time (30 minutes to an hour a day) if she pees I make the 'sssss' sound. It's a step, right?

  • LO started at 7 weeks.  We go through ebbs and flows of how often we do it/how successful we are.  The more we do it though, he certainly gets better at signaling and holding it.  Around 1 year, DCP started doing it with him.

When summer break started, I decided to be really dedicated and see how far we got.  In the past two weeks we've gone from him basically not cuing and catching only a few times a day, to him basically dry all of the time.  We are not diaper-free pretty much ever, but he now will usually hold it until I offer, and he has starting climbing onto his Baby Bjorn potty this week when he has to go.  Potty independence, no, but my child does understand where potty and poop go, and prefers it that way.

Today was his first day in trainers.  They stayed dry.  We give him a potty-tunity, if you will: upon waking, before sleep, immediately after consuming liquids or any and all meals, before and after getting into/out of a carseat or baby carrier, if it's somehow been around 1 1/2 hours without any of that happening.

Read the book. Very helpful.  Have fun, and stay relaxed!  Enjoy the lessened laundry!

  • We do PT EC and have since DS was about 3 months. I see no reason to not do it at least PT because I love that baby and I can communicate and I can help meet his needs more effectively--the heart of EC is the communication element not where "going" happens (though "catches" are always awesome). So, if you are driving your DD home from daycare and she signs and you let her know she can just go in her diaper, that is still EC. If she pees in her diaper and then signs to her caretaker about it, even if they have no clue--that is EC, too (though I've found that even providers like the benefit of knowing how to keep baby drier and happier).
  • We are just starting, and doing it parttime for now. I need to get the book but it seems like the best advice is to let them be diaper free if possible and watch them for cues and see what happens lol.

This morning LO peed on the floor but then peed in the potty later. It's a start!

  • We started doing it part time a few weeks ago and I love it!  Just thought I would try it for a day for fun, and now I'm hooked! I take her to potty when she wakes up, when she starts squirming during BF'ing and other times she seems restless.  If we are at home I get most of her poops. It is so much cleaner!  I find it doesn't take that much more time than changing her diapers. I think she is happier being dry.

    Have fun!

  • We've been doing it pretty much FT since 5 months, my LO is almost a year now and he usually poops and pees on his potty but he can be stubborn and purposely pee on the floor right after I put him on his potty.  He definitely has excellent bowel/bladder control though.  I'm putting him in underwear this week
