Parenting after 35

He Dropped the Nap

And it SUCKS!!!

I mean he is happy enough but is clearly exhausted and refuses to sleep. I have no freaking willpower and can't leave him in his crib for an hour screaming "Mama, Mama, Get me out of here!"  DH feels if we make it a punishment, being in his bed/crib/room it's a bad idea.

But I think my soon-to-be-three-year-old has won this, despite the fact that he needs his sleep.

DS has just started to do this as well, but only at home.  He is required to at least lay down at daycare for an hour.  On the weekends, he will stay awake the entire day, which makes the 6-8:30 hours a real PITA.  I feel for you.   Can you try putting him to bed at least a half hour earlier, to put yourself out of the misery?

  • We've been battling this for weeks.

    Three words.. Car Ride Nap.

Some days it works, some days it doesn't.

  • Good luck with that, I bet it sucks! Ian started daycare, so that kind of moves him towards 1 nap per day. You would think it will be longer, but it is not. Even his overnight sleep is shorther. The result is cranky baby all day long;. And yes, it really sucks!

  • Today, after Aaron woke at 5:40 am (nearly an hour earlier than usual), I decided that tough love was the way to go. I basically plopped him in his crib and told him that unless I see he's hurt (video monitor) I was not coming in to get him until nap time was over. He cried a bit and called for me but after 10 minutes he lay down and was asleep within 15 minutes of me leaving him in his room. He slept for an hour.

I'll keep trying this. Otherwise I may have to drive to Pennsylvania to institute the "car ride nap" (I live about 35 miles East of the Delaware River).  But he cannot function on barely 9 hours of sleep per day. Not at this age.

Mama is taking back the nap for all our sakes.

  • The transitioning stage between two naps a day to one nap and then to no nap is so brutal.  Your LO sounds like he still needs nap.  Good luck  - stay strong.

  • When my daughter started refusing to take a nap, I began "quiet time" at our house instead. I'd let her take a pile of books and look at them quietly while lying down. Most days, she'd fall asleep after looking through the books. I thought a little quiet time in the day was good for both of us even if she refused to sleep.
