Am I working out too much?

So my workout routine is as follows: 5 days a week I powerwalk 2 miles uphill on the treadmill. I just started getting back in the gym recently. It takes me about 33 minutes to walk 2 miles so its not like I'm going super fast or anything (I walk at 3.7 mph at a 1.5% incline). I've got a 2 year old DD at home and 40 excess pounds to lose (I'm also doing WW). Do you guys think I'm doing too much? I'm never in the gym longer than 35 minutes. WDYT?

Re: Am I working out too much?

  • Why do you think that may be too much.  That doesn't sound like too much at all, as long as you feel okay doing it.  I would even up the incline to around 3 and see if you can keep up that speed.  Then try to increase your speed little by little as well.

  • I do feel good doing it. I think next week I'm going to bump it up to 4.0
  • Not too much...why do you think it might be? That seem good to me, I walk about 45 minutes give or take 5-6 days a week and some is uphill and some is not.

  • Sounds like a healthy amount of exercise to me! Good for you!

I might encourage you to change up your routine a little bit to avoid burnout, work different muscle groups and challenge yourself. Maybe do your treadmill routine 3x a week and 2x a week do weights or pilates. I think you'll notice a bigger/maybe faster change in the shape of your body if you incorporate different workouts. Your body gets used to a routine after awhile so it is always good to change things up and push yourself. You also don't want to overuse your walking muscles and cause injury.

    Keep going! You're doing great!

  • 2 miles is quite a short distance.  You would def see more of a distance it you bumped it up to at least 4 miles/day or alternated with something like the eliptical those days and did resistance training for 45-60 min the other 2 days.
