still BF when #2 arrives?

I still BF DD and hope to continue untill she's ready to stop. I found out a few weeks ago that I'm pregnant again and I'm concerned about when I'm in tye hospital. Here you stay for about 6 days! DD can come and see me but I'm concerned about her through the night etc. I know she'll be older but anyone have any success in this situation?

Re: still BF when #2 arrives?

  • I was still BF when my 2nd arrived (and still am) but I didn't have the hospital stay issue. We used a birth center and I went home the same day. If I were you I'd look into your options for leaving sooner (24-48 hours is pretty reasonable) but if not I wouldn't worry too much about it. An older toddler doesn't need to nurse as frequently and can sometimes accept substitutions. Between now and your hospital stay I'd work on alternative sleep associations (if she nurses to sleep) and also building up a good network of people she trusts who can stay with her at night. If possible I'd have them stay at your home.

Also, good luck with tandem nursing. It's wonderful.

I didn't have to stay for 6 days but I was in the hospital 2 nights when DD2 was born.  I tandem nursed for 6 months until DD1 weaned.  I was more worried about DD1 than I was about going into labor.  DD1 was perfect.  She was 18 months when DD2 was born and my MIL stayed at our house while I was in the hospital.  She was only nursing 3 times a day by the time DD2 arrived and went without nursing for the 1.5 days.  She picked it back up no problem after I came home.  I didn't have her come to the hospital the day after DD2 was born (she was born at 7:30pm and DD1 was in bed already).  I didn't know how she would react leaving me in the hospital so we decided to keep her home until it was time to be discharged.

On the day we were discharged my MIL brought DD1 to the hospital.  I had DD2 in the little bassinet by the bed when DD1 entered the room.  That way she could come to me and her sister could join our family vs. DD1 joining our new family.  It worked beautifully.  We have their meeting on video and I love it.  We were then discharged and we all went home together as a new family of 4.

Tandem nursing is wonderful!!  I highly recommend reading Adventures in Tandem Nursing.  It covers a lot about nursing while pregnant as well as nursing 2.
