HFM ?

Hand, foot and mouth has been going around here and it looks like it finally caught us.  Fortunately DD has a mild case but I am hearing lots of conflicting information on how long they are contagious- from she already has passed that stage to the CDC site saying weeks after they are well they can still be contagious.  How long did/would you stay away from other kids?  We host a lot of parties and play dates so I want to be careful not to pass this on to anyone if possible but weeks sounds ridiculous.  Cleaning all the toys (and putting many of them up so I don't need to clean again.

Re: HFM ?

  • For daycare we were told 24 hours with no fever and no blisters, since they can contract it from contact in the fluid if the blisters break open.

thanks for the info. Fever has been gone for a couple days so now we will wait for the blisters to go away.

  • DS also had a very mild case and our pedi said once he was fever free for 24 hours and didn't have any open blisters he was no longer contagious. DS never even had a fever and none of his blisters were open so it was more difficult to determine for us. But none of his cousins got it and they're the only kids he was around.

DD has had it twice and both times she never got the blisters on her hands or feet, she just had a high fever for a couple of days and the white spots in her throat.  Both times they tested for strep and since that was negative they determined it was a version of HFM.
