Hi!
I've been lurking this board for quite some time and would really like your input on something. I had my son by unplanned c-section in December of 2010, for what I believed to be heart decels. However I just recently looked over the medical records and notice that the reasons listed for the c-section were Failure to Progress and Premature Rupture of the Membranes. Nowhere did it mention that his heart rate dropped off the monitor a few times during contractions.
This is a sore point for me because I always thought of this c-section as necessary, but the way the medical records read it seems like they just thought I wasn't progressing fast enough. Has anyone had a similar experience when looking over medical records? Also did this affect your chances for a VBAC?
Thanks!!
Re: C section medical records
Hi, failure to progress would not impact a doctor's decision to view you as a good candidate for a VBAC so I would not worry about it.
It is frustrating that we cannot trust our medical professionals when it comes to OBGYNs sometimes and delivering babies. I had a similar experience with my first child that ended in a csec. I switched physicians and I am trying for a VBAC with the new doc. Mine was failure to progress and fetal stress.
Yea that's really similar to mine. I wasn't induced but after 8 hours in the hospital never dilated past 1cm. When they delivered him they found out that the cord was around his neck, but there was nothing saying that the cord was an issue.
My mom did end up talking to the midwive who delivered all of us kids and she seemed to think that I didn't dilate further because my son was in danger, but nothing in the medical records confirms that. ::sigh:: and just when I was coming to terms with the c-section being necessary I run into this which makes it seems like it was completely unnecessary.
If it bothers you, you could contact the hospital for a correction. I did that. I had an ER c-section after an 80% spontanteous placenta abruption. I was 37 weeks along just sitting in a chair at home when I started gushing blood (I thought my water broke until I stood up- I had a very healthy pregnancy until that point). When I read my records, it indicated that I arrived at the ER in active labor- which wasn't true. So I contacted the hospital and had it corrected. It was no big deal. I did it just because it made my record accurate and it just irritated me. Whether it was changed or not, it would not have changed my chances for a VBAC. Regardless I would have a VBAC or find another provider.
Another thing to think of- did you have a medicated birth? I.e. induced, epi, etc.? Those things are known to lower heartrates and slow progress so if you did, perhaps its not mentioned since its already a give in since that would be in your chart anyways. Just a thought....
Thanks, I'll look into getting that changed. I hadn't taken any medication or had my labor augmented in any way so that wouldn't have contributed to things slowing down. The contractions were pretty regular at home but once I got to the hospital they got really weak, and when they picked up again my son's heart rate started dropping.
