We may have an allergy - eggs

Yesterday I gave LO a little bit of fried egg white from my plate.  Within 10 minutes his chin was all red.  So this morning I gave  him a smidgen of scrambled egg.  5 minutes later, red chin.  The strange thing is, last week he had egg yoke, but had no issue with it.  Turns out, according to dr. Google, the allergins are in the proteins in the whites.  Who knew?  Anyhow, no more eggs for him until after our pediatrician appointment.

  • Not cool! But at least you've found it without a major complication. As for the flu shot, there are egg-free versions so you should still be able to get one!
  • I'm relieved that it was just a skin reaction.  Hope he grows out of it quickly.  Eggs are in everything!

Hopefully this isn't a result of my raw cookie dough habit.

  • Just FYI, that's why they suggest not giving eggs until 1 yr old.

I was allergic to eggs when I was little so we usually push it further than 1.  My ds is allergic to eggs and we found that out by allergy testing because we hadn't given him eggs yet and were suspecting other allergies he needed to be tested for.

  • Yup, with no history of food alergies on either side we were taking a very inclusive approach to introducing solids.  Now I'm a bit skittish.

LO is still on BM and I eat plenty of eggs, and he had no reaction to yokes, so I was doubtful that it was the egg that caused the reaction.  But just in case, I made sure to try it again while we were having brunch with his family doctor grandpa and nurse grandma.  And there is an epi pen in our medical kit, so we were pretty well covered in case of reaction. I feel kind of bad that I didnt give them a heads up first, but I figured that I would let them enjoy their breakfast.

DD1 is severely allergic to eggs. She gets hives if they touch her skin. She has the same reaction to dairy products, so she's dairy, egg, (and soy free). Neither DH, nor I have a history of food allergies, so we were really surprised DD1 has allergies. Honestly, egg is one of the easier allergens to avoid. Dairy and soy, for example, really are in everything. Right down to Enfamil vit d drops! (It's in the caramel coloring). Anyway, eggs are easily substituted in baking. I've had great success with 1/4 cup applesauce per egg as well as 1 T ground flax seed + 3 T water per egg. I'd have your LO tested for allergies around age 1 to see if he has other allergies. And I'd be more conservative in your approach to introducing solids, especially highly allergenic foods, from here on out.
