S/O OWT, but not an OWT: Gender & Family History

Most of the OWTs about our LOs gender have been wrong, but this was a theory I found interesting.

A friend of mine were talking and she said that she noticed a trend when it came to the gender of children in their families.

The theory is basically whatever the mother had first (if ended up having a girl) then the daughter will follow in her foot steps and so on.

This is an example from people I know, and all of these are true.

H's grandmother's first child was a boy, and H's mother's first child was a boy.

My mom's first child was a boy, my sister's first child was a boy, and my first child is a boy.

My aunt's mother's first child was a girl, my aunt's first child was a girl, and my cousin's first child was a girl.

My friend's grandmother's first child was a girl, and her daughter's first child was a girl.

It isn't fool-proof by any means, but I found it to be an interesting trend. Is it proving true for you as it did for me?

  • Not really My sister's first was a boy and so is mine. That is about it in my family. We come from a family of girls and for us to have boys everyone was surprised. lol

  • Not for me!

My Nan had a boy first, mom had a girl first (me) and I have two boys!

But, the needle and thread has been right for both my boys!

  • It rings true for my parents (their parents had girls and my oldest sibling is a girl) but in my family so far it's not the case since my older sister has had two boys.

I was, however, wondering if pregnancy aspects that OWTs are based on seem to be true for families. For example, my sister carried both of her boys really high, whereas I'm carrying low. Does this mean girl for me? (and of course, probably not, because I'm pretty sure the same woman will sometimes carry totally differently for two babies of the same sex, etc).

  • We're a family of three girls and both my sister and I both had boys first :)

Also, my mom is the 2nd oldest of 8 kids and has an older brother.  Again, she had 3 girls.

I've actually never had an OWT come true for any of my kids (though we're team green this time, so we'll see. :)

  • Nope--not on either side.

My grandma's first was a boy.  Hers went boy, girl, boy.  All 3 of those had girls first including my Mom.

DH's grandma had a girl first, DHs Mom had a boy first.

Unfortunately I can't think of one person in our family this is true for!

  • Not for me.  My grandma's first child was my mother.  My mother's first child was my sister.  My sister has a son.  I'm having a son.

But seriously - we know the male carries the sex gene right?  Women don't determine the sex of the baby.  The sperm does.

  • My sisters firstborn was a boy, unlike my mothers.. I don't think that's really 100% accurate either, but kinda fun to think about.

Yes, I believe the majority of us know that.

It's just an interesting theory on trends in families.

  • Sounds like it could be 50% right every time. Wink
  • Not a trend on my end. My grandmother's first child was a girl, my mother's first child was a girl, and my sister had a boy and I'm PG with a boy. Although, DH's mother's first child was a boy, and all 3 of her kids had boys first.

  • Nope.. my grandmothers both had boys 1st and so did my mom. the only one who had a girl (1st and only) was my aunt (dad's sister) and even on my DH's side all boys.
  • Both of my grandmothers had boys. My mom's first born is my older brother. He had a son.

  • I come from a long line of people who only have girls. Boys are incredibly rare in my family. I actually did some research and found out that the pH of the uterus can influence the sex of the baby and it can be passed down through generations. Here's our breakdown:

Maternal grandmother- 1 of 3 girls

    Mom- 1 of 4 girls

My mom's sisters have the following- 6 girls- those girls (my cousins) have now given birth to 6 girls and 1 boy

My own siblings consist of 5 girls and 1 boy.

Here are my siblings breakdown of kids

    sister #1- 3 girls

    sister #2- 4 girls

    me- 3 girls

    sister #3- 3 girls 1 boy

    sister #4- 2 girls

My brother has yet to have children, but this theory obviously wouldn't apply to him since he doesn't have a uterus.

So of all the aunts, great aunts, grandmother, grandchildren, the total is:

    39 girls and 3 boys.

If you read the very long post I just made in this post, you'll see that the woman can control the sex. In my family there is clearly a trend of almost all girls. I've read a few studies about the pH of the uterus being more hospital to one sex or the other. The pH can be passed down from mother to daughter. I think this is why my family is almost all girls.

  • I'd say that holds true in my family overall.

I had boy, now girl. Mom had boy, then girl. Dad "had" boy, then girl (Mom and Dad each had a son previously before getting together to make me).

Maternal Grandma and Great-Grandma both had boy, then girl (though Grandma went on to have more kids).

Paternal Grandma had boy, then girl.

Not all, but most of my aunts and uncles have boy then girl.

  • I actually completely changed the trend on my side of the family. My great-grandmother, grandmother, mother and myself are all first-born girls.  Out of 5 generations, I am the only first-born girl to not have a girl first.  I also am the only one in that line not to have a child around a year or less of being married (DH and I have our 4th anniversary the end of July).

On my dad's side, it has been mostly girls first as well.  There are a few who had boys first; but not many.

DH's family seems to alternate, so no pattern there.
