Brown Blood ? (TMI)

I'm 4 weeks 5 days and I've been experiencing like cramping like I did with my first pregnancy, but I just went to the bathroom and noticed some brown blood. Not massive, but enough that I could see it dripping into the toilet (sorry for TMI). I put on a pantyliner to see if it increases. My first appt isn't until Friday. Should I call them ? Should I just wait it out. I'm trying not to panic, but this isn't something I have ever experienced and I'm scared.

Prayers & Positive vibes please.

I posted this on 1st Trimester. To anyone that is seeing it twice.

Re: Brown Blood ? (TMI)

  • I have had the same thing a few times this week, I am thinking it is just old blood working its way out after implantation. I do remember it happening with my first pregnancy too, and they told me not to worry unless it was red blood. Also, sex can cause this to happen this early on as well!

Hopefully that is all it is for both of us. Thoughts and prayers being sent your way!

  • This has not happened to me, but everything I have read says that you need to worry about red blood, not brown blood.

That said, if it will help your piece of mind, call your doctor and talk to a nurse.

  • I also had this with my first pg around 6weeks. I called and they wanted to see me regardless but also letting me know its prob from implantation etc.

Just keep and eye on it and if it makes you feel better to call and be seen then go ahead. Hugs!

  • Like the others, I've heard brown blood is old blood and is fine. Still scary though! I hope it goes away quickly. T & P for you!

  • My miscarriage started with brown blood.  I am not saying that you are having one, but brown blood is not always 100% fine.  For how early you are, it does sound like some leftover implantation bleeding.  Good luck!

  • I would definitely call. It's probably old but I would check. Thinking good thoughts for you, keep us posted.
  • I have had brown spotting for the past 4 days.  It is very light, and comes and goes, but I have been FREAKING OUT.

My internet research has basically concluded that:

    1.  Brown blood is less worrisome than pink/red

    2.  Blood is usually only a problem if accompanied by strong cramping

    3.  about 20-25% of pregnant women have spotting

    4.  out of that 20-25%, 80% will deliver healthy babies & 20% will miscarry or have complications.  However, I also read that spotting = 50% chance of miscarriage.   These stats are all very suspect.

    5.  There are TONS of stories of women who have experience spotting (& even major bleeding) and then gone on to deliver healthy babies.

    6.  There are also plenty of stories about brown spotting leading to pink to red to full on miscarriage.  With most miscarriage stories that I have read, the spotting progression seems to happen withing 24 hours or so.  But some take much longer.

    7.  Implantation bleeding does continue throughout weeks 5,6,7 & maybe even longer.  Basically, the baby is just nestling in to the uterus.  Around week 6, the placenta also will attach to the uterus, which explains a new round of "implantation bleeding".  I'm convinced (in my optimistic moments) that this is what is happening with my body.

    8.  If you go to a doctor or emergency room, they will do bloodwork to measure your hcg levels and other hormone levels.  In order to get meaningful data, you will need to return for more bloodwork 2-3 days later.  HCG levels should be doubling (or at least rising!).  If you are spotting, it's likely that you also have low progesterone.  They might prescribe progesterone suppositories.  There is no good research on whether these are effective.  Many people swear by them, but many doctors think it just delays an inevitable miscarriage.

The doctor can also do an ultrasound to make sure that the egg & yolk look good, but if they don't look good there isn't anything they can do to help.

If you are around 6 weeks, they might even be able to hear the heartbeat (but don't be disappointed if there is no heartbeat until week 11).

    9.  If you experience spotting or cramping of any degree, the first thing you should do is rest.  Modified bed rest is best.  I've taken this as "basically stay in bed (sitting up with my feet up), but it's ok to get up when I need to".

    10.  Here are other suggestions:

    • drink lots of water
    • drink raspberry leaf tea to support your hormonal balance
    • stay away from estrogenic foods (soy & most other beans)
    • eat celery, dark leafy greens, carrots & loads of black pepper
    • press your tongue on the roof of your mouth just behind your front teeth for 15 seconds, 2x/day (more if symptoms get worse)
    • breathe deeply!  try to stay positive and visualize a healthy baby (I hate it when I hear this advice... but it's probably a good idea if you can)
    • get acupuncture (make sure the practitioner has experience with pregnancy)
    • get adjusted by a chiropractor (again, make sure the practioner has experience with pregnancy)
    • go see a traditional chinese medicine (TCM) practitioner for herbs

Hope this info helps!  I would love to hear more stories of women who have experienced spotting if anyone wants to share.  It's just nice to know that I'm not the only one.

  • I'm experiencing the same thing today and although I was terrified this morning, I have been a bit comforted by the different things I've read both on here and other Google searches (You've got to love Dr. Google! lol).   I miscarried in January and felt very very different than I do now.  Like others mentioned, I think it's bright red blood accompanied with severe cramping that we should really really be worried about.

I am still a bit worried today, but am trying to remember that if it does turn for the worst, there's nothing I can do to control it.  I've not touched alcohol, caffeine etc this month at all so I can't blame myself if it turns out to be bad.  I think we're okay though!

Good luck, I'll be thinking about you!!!

  • My midwife never returned my call. However I'm fairly certain that I am in the process of a miscarriage . I started bleeding more when I use the restroom. Not massive, but fairly significant. I'm going to call again & hope I get a call back . I'm hoping for confirmation. Thank you so much for your information & support. I wish Nothing but the best for you all.

  • I have been thinking of you and hope things turn around! Waiting is the worst. I also had some bleeding and had the blood work done last Thursday and Saturday. Called in three times yesterday because I was so anxious to get the results.
