Potty seat for public restrooms? what do you use?

We just got back from a weekend trip where we visited every potty in the city.  We bought one of those travel rings (cars one from Toysrus) that folds up but it's really flimsy and LO fell in once.  It was very traumatic for him to fall in but won't let me hold onto him while he goes, frustrating.

Is there something better we can get? More sturdy?  How long do you have to carry around the insert until big public potties aren't a problem anymore?

  • We use this:

     https://www.amazon.com/Kalencom-2-in-1-Potette-Plus-Red/dp/B0016KV73W/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1341244019&sr=1-1&keywords=potette+plus

It folds up so it fits in my  large purse easily. It has rubber grips on the sides. I used it in a public restroom yesterday and had no issues.

I should change that to say my DD USED it. . . I've mastered not needing a potty seat for quite a few years no, thank you very much. . . .  :)

We have two cars seats that fold. My dd is 27 lbs, is weight an issue? We've never had any problems.

  • We used our foldup (sesame st) one yesterday too & it was a big fail. Moves around so much... I am curious to see what ppl say b/c DD absolutely refuses to go in public, sits for like 5 sec and says she can't go, not on the seat, not on the seat w/ TP on it, not on the potty seat thing and yesterday I thought maybe we'd hit the jackpot b/c our museum has little tiny kid potties and she wouldn't go on that either. Ugh.  We have a long road trip coming up & I guess the little floor potty seat will be going in the back of the car.
  • Purell.  Otherwise I just hold them or "sit" behind them (they are terrified of autoflush).  I don't want to carry something around that has touched a public toilet!

This.  We love it.  DD no longer wants me to hold onto her so this works great.  Technically the only thing the portable seat is touching is the toilet seat and if that still bothers you put a seat cover before placing the seat.  It also works on the floor.  You just snap the legs into place and put a plastic bag with paper towels in it.  I always make sure to wipe it down when we're home.

Someone on here a few weeks ago mentioned carrying around sticky notes to cover up the auto flush sensor.

I got the potette plus too. Haven't used it yet as my DD refuses to sit on any potty at the moment. It does look very cool and sturdy though and folds up small.

  • We stand our boys on the seat if they have pee. Didn't like the fold up seat either. They didn't feel comfortable on it. They rarely have to poop in a public potty but if they do we hold them sitting.

I hate the Sesame St one, too!  I bought it b/c so many people recommended it, but it DOES move all over the place.  And, DD even fell through the middle of it!  I might purchase the Potette Plus as well.  I've heard great things about it.

  • Another vote for the Potette Plus. We wipe it down and transport it in a plastic bag in DS' backpack.

  • I originally bought the fold up one and my son maybe used it like 3-4 times and then it just was a pain.  Then I used the trick of just sitting him backwards on the toilet.  Yes his butt is touching the seat but guess what most of us do too.  That is what sanitizer and hand washing is for.  Now he is standing up and peeing.  Since he is little and can't reach the toilet he usually just stands on my feet and I aim for him.

  • I used to have him sit backwards (facing the toilet) with his legs strattling the seat. This way his bum was on the skinnier section of the seat and he was able to hold himself upright.
