Cows Milk

When is the 'right' time to start cow's milk? Any suggestions?

Re: Cows Milk

  • When your doctor gives the okay, at about a year unless there are other issues that would mean you need to wait. We started about a week or two after DD1's first birthday - we had to travel for a funeral and I didn't want to make the switch when we were away from home. Plus I wanted to use up our formula stash.

  • started about 10 1/2 mos...Pedi recommended close to 1 year to start transition but I moved it up because DS has a great digestive system and we started slow.  He is doing just fine....I started DD at 11 mos and she is perfectly healthy!

  • We started around 10 months (at recommendation of pedi) to add one ounce of lactose free whole milk to his bottles and slowly increase ratio. We've been doing this for about 4 weeks and we're up to about 2 ounces milk per bottle. DS has struggled with a milk protein allergy and has been on Elecare since around 4 months, but he's doing remarkably well.

  • I started adding some to her formula at 11 months and now, at almost 1 year, she is fully on WCM without any issues.  It actually worked VERY well for us.  She is a really great eater and has been eating solids from about 8 months - finger feeding herself!  So by switching her already, she has been eating more solids and has cut way back on the amount of bottles she takes during the day and she has been sleeping MUCH MUCH better!  Of course, I would totally check with your pedi, I just went with my gut and it was what was also recommended by my pedi with DD#1.

  • We just started at about 11.5 months. I did a little mix of WCM and formula but then offered plain WCM and LO took it fine. I consider that lucky. He has been doing fine on it so far. I even added it to his morning oatmeal.

  • I started offering a bit in a cup at meals this weekend. Recommendations are different here; they are to introduce WCM anywhere between 9-12m.

  • Amount matters. We introduced it at 11 months, but DS is still primarily breast fed. He takes WCM at daycare, but it's only 3-4 oz a day. At that amount, it's just another food not his primary nutrition source.
  • We started 2 weeks ago and DS is already almost totally switched over. The only reason we still give him any formula is just because I still have some and don't want to waste it. He takes strictly WCM in his sippies during the day and gets 1/4 formula 3/4 WCM in his two night bottles.

This.  DS eats well balanced meals and the switch to milk has had no impact except he has completely quit spitting up.  Go with your gut.  If you have a good eater with no belly issues I say anytime after 9 months.

  • We haven't done it yet, but our Pedi suggested at 1 year just switch completley.  Meaning stopping formula cold turkey.

I'm not sure what we are going to do.  Not sure if the cold turkey method will work for our LO.

  • DS is a few days shy of 1. We've switched his lunch time formula with WCM.  He gets Forumla in the morning and I'm debating right now if I'll give him WCM or formula when he wakes up in a bit. I have about 1/2 of a big tub of formula left, once that is gone he won't get any more.

  • We started at 10 months per the pedis ok. We just started giving it to her in a sippy for snacks and she loves it. We are on day 2 of no bottles as well. Morning and nighttime I put formula in a sippy.

  • My kid will eat anything that doesn't bite her first.  We don't have any food allergies on either side of the family.  So she has had some of the no-nos already - milk and eggs.  I still haven't done nuts or honey.  She has some reflux still and spits up all the time.  I noticed no difference the times I've given her cow's milk.  I plan on using up the formula we have and then going to milk in the sippy, whenever that occurs.  She's taking sometimes only 2 bottles a day now anyway.  I don't see any problem with giving cow's milk in addition, but I don't want to sub/stop the formula yet for nutritional reasons.
