Re: Trying to become foster parents... advice?

  • Check the FAQs. I believe there are some resources addressing fostering.

     Congrats and GL!

  • Congrats and welcome. I also did fostering.  It's a roller coaster of emotions but so worth it.  First attend an orientation at your agency.  Then the paperwork and classes will begin.  Each state is different in what they require.  Then you will have to do fingerprinting and clearance, health statements, homestudy, etc.  It will be a lot of waiting, so be prepared.  Good luck and pls post is you have any specific questions.
  • Before you start your homestudy process, and signing any paperwork, check out all your options.

In our state, you can go through the county DFS, or you can go through a private agency to do fostering. In our state, both the DFS and agencies foster all ages.  In some states the contracted agencies do specific ages, or specific cases.  You might have a "better fit" depending on what ages you want to foster and what your family life style is.
  • Congrats on starting your journey!  Unfortunately, foster parents varies wildly by state.  My best advice is try to find other foster parents in your state to ask questions about how things work.  Before I knew any foster parents, I did a ton of research and ended up finding foster parent blogs.  The blogs turned out to be the best resource (even now) since they give you a better idea of the full picture (all of the ups and the downs).  Also, those bloggers were super nice and answered tons of questions.  I am actually now really good friends with one of the bloggers!

This forum is also a great resource too!  So feel free to ask questions as they come up!

  • Congrats on making this big decision! I dont have a whole lot of advice since I am actually only halfway thru my states foster parent classes. So far its been a very exciting and eye opening road. Good luck!
