Babies: 9 - 12 Months

do I have the only 11 month old that STILL doesn't sleep?

DD's sleep habits are all over the place. Some nights she falls right to sleep; other nights, she can take up to 2 hours to fall asleep. Sometimes she will wake up 3 - 4 times through the night, or sometimes only once. I can't figure out a pattern or reason with her eating schedule, nap schedule, etc. DD #1 was sleeping much better at this age, so I have no idea what to do about it.

  • NOPE!  Mine is all over the place too...

He used to fall asleep on his own no problem...now it lots of crying, Rocking, up and down....We always start the bed routing at 8 pm, we do bath every other night, we read on the other nights...Sometimes DS will sleep from about 8:30 until 5:30, take a bottle then go back to sleep for a couple of hours...some nightrs he's up more. like 2, then 5 then back down.  I feel like we get close to good sleep habits then he gets sick again and we have to start at square one....He hasnt been taking his nighttime bottle as well, so that effects things too...

Tonight was easy, he went down no problem!

  • My 13 month old still doesn't sleep! I wish she did. She goes to sleep just fine if I put her to sleep but doesn't stay asleep but maybe 2-3 hours maybe 4 max. I'm exhausted. So you aren't the only one!
  • My sister's 14 month old still doesn't, if that makes you feel any better!

  • MIne falls asleep okay on her own, but is up every 2-2.5 hours all night, every night.  Every night is a freaking picnic.  Stick out tongue

  • Rather than letting her lead the way, have you tried putting her on a schedule? DS is a very energetic baby and if I let him lead the way it would be utter chaos. But he does very well with a two nap schedule and bedtime between 6:30-7.

  • P used to fall asleep on her own (for naps) no problem. Then at 9 months she decided to stop- and never looked back. She takes maybe one nap a day, in the car. Since I brought her home I have always nursed her to sleep at night and we are just starting to try and break that. Hang in there!

This is us too.  I always feel like the crazy sleep obsessed mom but it has helped DD to be on a schedule as she would otherwise fight sleep like the dickens.  The transition to two naps (at roughly same time every day regardless of am wake up) was a rough one but it has made a difference and I think she knows to expect naps and bedtime.  DOesn't mean it is always easy but it is better.  We also did sleep training for naps and night time and I don't know if you have or would want to -- I totally understand either way but it was a life saver for us and for DDs sleep.  She wakes once at night to nurse (sometimes she'll wake 2 but will put herself back to sleep and I don't feed her before 3am unless she is wailing and it is clear something is off).

  • Not yet and mine is almost 14 months.

  • What is this...sleep...thing you are speaking of?

DD was doing great. She would do a 6 hour stretch, then a 4, then a 2, then up for the day. Now she's doing a 3 hour, then a 2, then 1, 1, 1, 1 killmenow!! I blame the tooth that is trying to come in. Combine that with her sudden hatred of all paci's (I used to be able to pop a paci to get her back to sleep) and there's a lot of nursing going on during the night.

I have tried that, and unfortunately it doesn't work. She gets tired before her scheduled nap time and is screamy and fussy until we let her go to sleep. Then, if we try to put her down earlier she just sits there and doesn't go to sleep. She does better with watching her sleep cues, which are different every day.

  • Katiewhompus...I just want to say I feel your pain! DS is going through the EXACT same thing, it's brutal. Absolutely brutal.

  • I have had success sleep training DS.  I do my routine of books, nursing and rocking and then I put him in his crib.  I do not go back to him until at least 5:30 am.  The first night he woke at his usual two times and cried for almost an hour.  The second night he woke once and cried fir 3 minutes.  Since then he has been STTN.

For naps I do similar.  I nurse and rock him and then just put him in his crib.  I leave him until he has slept.  At first he cried for nearly an hour, but now he sleeps everytime.  I choose when he is ready for a nap based on cues.  Usually 2.5-3 hours after waking.

My first LO was a horrible sleeper and training failed big time.  I was not confident.  This time I recognize the importance of sleep for everyone involved.

  • We get to 1x a night (for 1-2 wks) and then have sleep regression due to new skills or teeth (for 1-2 wks), or whatever.  It does seem to follow a pattern in that it's a week at a time - or in the case of the teeth coming through, two days of 4x a night.  I am also exhausted and had DH on "duty" all last night (a 2x night).

I have done this twice before and feel like I dont know what to do about it. If tried cio for about 5 minutes andI stated crying and couldn't do it.
