Window safety guards

My daighter's room has a low window that I'm afraid she could fall out of if she were to climb on something. I want to get a window guard of some sort but I am not sure that I will be able to find something our HOA will approve of. Any suggestions?

Do you have full size window screens? I always just open from the top.

It opens horizontally not vertically. :(

  • I am going through the same thing.  I looked on amazon and there are a lot of options.  Mine open up and down but, not from the top.  Im still unsure what the best options is.   I look forward to hearing the suggestions here.

  • If you have regular sliding windows (not casement windows) you can get inexpensive window locks to prevent the window from opening far enough to crawl out of.

If you want the window all the way open, I guess you'd have to put up some kind of bars. All the windows our DD has access to are on the first floor, so we never really worried about her crawling/falling out.

  • Not sure about the HOA laws in your state, but here, unless it specifically disallows something in your CCRs, then the HOA can't really say no.

As an example, in ours it says no above ground pools- therefore none can be approved. However since the CCRs doesn't mention trampolines, we cannot say a homeowner can't have one. All we can say is it has to be behind the house.

There are loopholes to it too even if it states it in the rules. Example of that is placement of satellite dishes, in the rules it says that can't be seen from the front of the house- however, FCC rules trump CCR's and HOAs cannot enforce placement of dishes since its a communication device.

So, perhaps, since you need a safety device to prevent your child from falling out of the window, I think they may allow it. Because if they deny your application for a window safety device and (God forbid) your child does fall out, you can sue. And the HOA does not want to be sued.
