Babies: 0 - 3 Months

for those who had epidurals...

Since delivery, I've noticed how stiff my back gets. It feels like it is right where the epidural was administered. When I bend over, I sometimes feel like, I can hardly straighten my back out. Anyone else experiencing this and what did you find helpful. I am 4 weeks pp...

Re: for those who had epidurals...

  • Hey! I am nearly 7 weeks PP and have a similar issue- I still feel kinda "sore" where I swear the needle went in. It's like it still feels bruised or something. It's not bothering me terribly, but I have found a warm bath may help with any stiffness!

  • I had some stiffness or bruised feeling right at the insertion site for a few weeks, but not like what you are describing.  The soreness went away by my pp check-up.  You sure it's not related to something else?  Sleeping differently or positioning when holding/feeding baby?

  • I feel the same way, too, sometimes & I'm almost 9 weeks postpartum.

What hurts even more is when I lie down on my back at night...  my entire lower back just ACHES.  : (

  • I have had a lot of back issues pp. I don't know how much of it is related to the epidural. I think some of it has to do with how I carry the baby. I finally called my doctor last week and she sent me to a chiropractor who massaged my back and adjusted me. I felt a lot better after that.

  • I had an epidural with my first delivery 3 years ago and I STILL have lower back issues. I always attributed it to being older and simply having delivered a baby. I didn't think of the epidural having a lasting effect on me until I mentioned it to my mother and she said lots of people have ongoing problems after an epi. :( Maybe it's time for me to get another massage...it's been nearly 2 years since I had a professional one ;)
  • I am 7 weeks pp & had the same issue in earlier pp weeks. doc gave me the okay to resume normal activities. since i've been walking, stretching & exercising I've noticed a tremendous improvement. The soreness I chalked up to epi but the stiffness i think is from 7 months of baby weight, sleeping on 1 side & just the general discomforts that go along with pregnancy.
  • Nope, my back has been feeling great. It was really achy carrying LO around, but since delivery there has been much relief.

  • I occasionally feel some pinching/soreness at the location of the epidural. Wasn't sure if it was normal or not, but it doesn't bother me much. Curious to see other answers!

This, big time! I'm 12 weeks pp, and it's still going on.

  • My DD is 4 months old and sometimes I get a stabbing pain where the epi was inserted.  Nothing I can't handle though and it only last 2-3 secs,  My sister's kids are 3 and 2 and she still gets a little pain from time to time where she got her epi.  Either way, it's worth it!!! I would NEVER not get one :)

  • My epi spot was sore for just a few days after LO was born, then it went back to normal. The anesthesiologist said that I was very easy to do one on though (bony!) so maybe that had something to do with it?

  • I had back pain after delivering DS (med-free, but had a spinal for repair of 3rd degree tear).  I think the back pain actually comes from abdominal muscle weakness, poor posture, bending over crib/bassinet, etc.  A heating pad really helps.  I am trying to maintain good posture this time, and my back has not hurt nearly as much (had epidural for c/s this time around).
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • Do you BF?

I was having a lot of pain when my daughter would latch, and I realized it made me really tense and stiffen my back muscles. That combined with some residual pain from the epi site made me pretty sore the first week or two. It resolved after that.

  • I had my epi almost at my shoulder blades - not sure why but I haven't had any issues there.

My lower back is muscle sore but I have had those issues previously.

  • The spot where I had the epi felt a bit bruised for a the first week or two, but it's absolutely fine now. I have had some lower back pain (did with DD too) but I attribute this to carrying around the heavy infant seat, nursing in odd positions at times, etc--and of course to having my abdominal muscles pulled apart during my c section!  Birth, however you do it, is rough on your body, so back pain is not a surprising result. Doing exercises for your back and particularly for your abs, to strengthen your core, should help a lot.

  • I had an epidural with DD and a spinal block with DS. I have never had any issues. I would consider seeing a chiropractor if you are having problems.
