Birth Certificate Question:

do any of you guys know of a site that possibly lists the states that would allow both of us (two women) to sign our baby's birth certificate? i have searched high and low and no such luck. even if any of you have had personal experience that would help also

     ETA: I gave birth in Maryland and no, we couldn't be on the original birth certificate. But once the adoption went through, we are on the amended one. And even if you are both on the birth certificate, I would HIGLY reccomend you still do a second parent adoption (if possible) since birth certificates aren't valid proof of parentage that transfers from state to state.

    we are in Georgia Confused ... and not atlanta either lol

    so the plan is to try for a second parent adoption also but that's not a guarantee approval down here so we were hoping to find a state that we could travel to for delivery possibly

    It isn't where you deliver, but where you reside. You would have to declare residency in another state to the second parent adoption there.

    Where in GA? I grew up in Savannah. :)

    we planned to do the second parent adoption here in georgia just not the delivery if we could help it not only because we want to both be allowed to sign the birth certificate but also because we want to have a water birth and Albany, GA

    we're in NJ and are both on the birth certificate.

     

    we also did a second parent adoption to be safe!

    We are in WI.  We considered the plan of getting married in Iowa then delivering there...until we learned that her insurance said she could not travel greater than an hour away within 30 days of her due date AND someone reminded us that if anything went awry during birth and he ended up in the NICU we would have medical bills the rest of our lives.

     We are not both on the birth certificate.  We do not have second parent adoption here.  I am his legal guardian.

    We live in Fulton county, delivered in Fulton county, and completed a second parent adoption in Fulton county. It was a very painless process. It was done in 2 months and without a home study. I could give you the name of an excellent attorney if you would like. The hospital that we delivered at also offers water births and has a very low c-section rate and the experience was amazing!

     For the original question though, both of our names were not on his original birth certificate but they are both on the amended one.

    I don't know about your state, but in AZ I couldn't be on the original birth certificate, but I was able to be put on the amended one.  If it is an adoption, this is how the certificate would be done.  If it's an insemination, then the one who gives birth would be on certificate and then once it is registered in vital records, you can apply for an amended certificate, which is where you can apply for this.

    We are in NY and both on the Birth Certificate.  We have no plans on second parent adoption at this point.

    Both of us are on baby's original birth certificate. We're in San Bernardino County, California. We were one of the 18000 couples to be married in 2008 before prop 8, so we brought in our marriage certificate to the hospital just in case.

    I'm excited to hear that both of you are in the original birth certificate, and that this is common practice is states that allow same sex marriage. We're in CT and have been legally married for 2 years (just got married in a church this past May).

    What are reasons to proceed with a second parent adoption if both of us are listed on the birth certificate? What does this do that the birth certificate does not? I'm new to this, and the info here is helpful!
