Friends return to their burned house

Our good friends Jo and Vic were interviewed for CBS This Morning... they have an amazing spirit and are already moving forward... have a new apartment and are anxious to rebuild their house.

Re: Friends return to their burned house

  • Well, it is a real challenge to keep up the good spirits in such situations. But if you can, that'd be certainly helpful. I hope they keep the spirit all the way until they rebuild the house.

P.S. I heard that the Colorado fires are mostly under control. So I am glad no more burning homes and evacuation.

  • Our town is slowing getting back to it's normal self, but it'll probably be weeks before the fire is actually controlled.  55% containment as of this morning.  Several thousand are still evacuated, mostly because of damage to utility lines.  Not to mention the 4,000 or so who do not have a home to return to at all.

Local tourist sites opened back up today (Garden of the Gods, etc).   Main highway 24 is partially open again, at least for now.  City leaders are very concerned about tourism dollars disappearing, since COS is a major tourist destination in the summer months.   They're encouraging locals to frequent the stores and restaurants who are most affected.. up on the west side and on up the pass.   We plan to go out tomorrow night to dine in Manitou with friends!   Just doin' our part! :)

  • Wow - I'm so glad she found at least one momento from the fire.  That would be so difficult.

  • That's so sad!! I'm just glad nobody was seriously hurt.
  • GT.. Not sure if I updated it here... the other day they found two bodies in one home. Judging by the county assessor's page, which lists the property as in a trust, my guess it was an elderly couple.   That home is just two doors down from another friends' home that was lost.  The house in between them was not damaged.  :(

Sorry to be such a downer.

Tongue Tied No, they didn't. All we get is the snippets on the local news. And sometimes bits on the Spokane news, but I fell asleep last night before they got to the story (it comes on at midnight). I watched some of the other stories, such devastation. And if it was an elderly couple, that is tragic. I can imagine that they hid when they were evacuating because they couldn't bear to leave their home. T&P's, hope that no one else is hurt.

  • It's so sad... I bet they just didn't know what was coming down the mountain toward their house.  One eyewitness says from when it crested the ridgeline to when it reached the houses below was only about 6 minutes.

Much happier news... we're up to 70% containment!

And Santa Claus is no longer evacuated!!!!!    There's a cute little kid amusement park up on the pass called the North Pole where Santa is there all year long... was planning to go last week.. yeah, that didn't happen!

  • I said a quick prayer for everyone when I saw the clip this morning.  Best of luck.

I saw the video. It scared the crap out of me. And that is kind of cute that Santa isn't being evacuated, at least one thing to smile about!

  • I couldn't read most of this thread - I hope you'll understand. I still suffer from severe PTSD and I'm trying to write this response without crying.

I'm really sorry to hear about all of this - and so sorry for your friends.

The reality doesn't hit for a while so things probably aren't what they seem emotionally. You get a crazy survival buzz.

    I don't know.

If you think she'd like to know someone who's been there and she has FB or wants to e-mail just drop me a PM and I can give you that info. It's very hard having nobody to relate to. Many people are very kind and gentle, generous...wonderful. But sometimes there are comments that hurt. Stuff that seems harmless. Like, "well, the important thing is that you survived." Yeah, that is true, but sometimes you just want to rage about the hurt you feel inside and be materialistic about your stuff. etc.

    I'm just so terribly sorry.
