I am blessed and highly favored.....

Discuss what this statement means to you.

I just had a customer say this to me on the phone a minute ago.  It irritates me when people imply that they are favored by :::insert your higher power of choice here::::

You are not "chosen" or "special", so get right over yourself.

What the hell were they even trying to discuss with you?

Well, I work for the Secretary of State.  In my section we file new Corp & LLC companies.  It was just at the beginning of our conversation.  He asked how I was & I asked in return.  That was his response.

That is really bizarre. I could understand blessed I guess but "highly favored". That sounds pretty arrogant?

I've never heard that as a response.  I would maybe say something like "We are so blessed" after a good day to DH, but I wouldn't say "I'm blessed, and how are you?" in a conversation.  That's a little odd, to me.

  • I think that statement (and I have seen it on cars too) is ridiculously arrogant. It's basically a "neener neener, I have more stuff than you because I think God gave it to me".

My mom has a shirt that says "Jesus loves you, but I'm his favorite" she wears (to church choir practice too) that I think is funny, but it's sort of the same premise.

  • I think he's trying to play a Jedi mind trick on you.

I am highly favored. You WILL give me what I want.

    Yep!

I get "I'm blessed" a lot, but they usually don't go on to brag that they are also favored.

For a minute there I thought my mom was posting!  She's a devout member of a "faith" church (they also teach the prosperity gospel) & says this exact phrase & other things like this all the time.  When she says "I am blessed & highly favored..."   she is standing in faith believing that she, as a "Child of God", will be "provided all her needs according to His riches in glory" (often in reference to finances or physical healing).  Yes, I was raised in this church & attended their private school.  I no longer believe this way.

I just found out yesterday that my mom made a weird comment at DS's bday party a month ago.  The party was in our community room & some kids (6 years old) grabbed the remotes to the TV/DVD.  My mom took them from them & said something along the lines of "taking away that temptation." Confused

At my wedding reception my mom's husband commented that "Jesus must not have been invited."  I assume he said this because there was alcohol & dancing to *gasp* secular music! Indifferent

Haha!  I can totally relate.  I was raised in this type of church environment as well.  My dad is also a minister.  I do not go to church or have those beliefs, but I know all about it.

  • Meh, I personally wouldn't get too worked up if someone said that to me. I grew up in a church where that was said a lot. I think there was even a hymn about it.  I think it was just his way of saying "I'm doing great!"

I googled it. This was interesting. I suppose this is what he meant. It didn't sound as arrogant reading this.

  • This explains it better than I can. Christians see everyone as "blessed and highly favored", not just themselves. They do not believe that God plays favorites.

When we say we are Blessed and Highly Favored, we are saying we:

Are Obedient to Him. Uh oh. We know we heard that still, small voice telling us to go right, but we went left. We know with every ounce of the Holy Ghost in us that we're about to do the wrong thing, but we do it anyway. We know that the mess we're currently praying God will straighten out could've been avoided if we'd just followed His instructions. It seems to me that the blessings and high favor were on the right. Had we'd just obeyed... Thank God His mercies are new every morning.

Have Faith in Him. Maybe it was a faith issue that had us leaning to our own understanding instead of obeying like we were supposed to. Let's be real. Who'd really expect us to blindly obey someone in whom we have no faith? But our faith in God needs to be such that we're unafraid to take the action necessary to accept what God has prepared for us. Faith allows us to be totally dependent upon Him, which is exactly what we need to be for Him to bless and favor us highly.

Know Him. We can't really know Him until we're firmly rooted in the Word. That's how we learn His likes and dislikes. It's how we learn to filter out our own desires and stick with His. It's where we learn how much he loves us. That's a blessing and a heap of high favor right there. But get this. It snowballs because propels us to serve Him out love and honor, rather than duty. We learn to love the Giver more than the gift. In turn, He blesses us all the more. It's a wonderfully precious circle.

Wait on Him. God is a master at timing. Have you ever noticed that? So why are we always in such a hurry to rush ahead of Him into places where we have no business? Is it really any wonder why we end up in a mess? But if we get in God's flow, how can we think we'd be anything other than highly favored and blessed?

Put Kingdom Purposes First. God loves it when we're so in love with Him that the only thing we want to do is what He has for us to do. From the beginning, He's blessed us all with unique gifts and talents that we are to use to bless the people around us. We need to become His hands working to fulfill the needs of others here on earth. To be effective and fruitful in this directive, God gives us everything we need "according to His riches in glory" to do the job He's set aside for us to do. Everything we need. That sounds like blessings and high favor to me.

Yeah, that explanation doesn't sound as arrogant.  I assume most non-church going people wouldn't know it meant this.  I grew up in church and didn't really know what it meant.  I just took it at face value.

  • I have to admit that if someone said this in response to "How are you," I would think it was quite odd and, yes, arrogant. I understand from the posts above that it means something different to people who say it, but I think it's odd to say to random people who may not know what you mean.

I think the first rule of communication is to know your audience - and if you don't know them, don't assume they know what you're talking about. I also think that the appropriate answer to "How are you" (at the start of a phone conversation between strangers) is "Fine, thanks. How are you?"

While it may be an odd response to a simple "How are you?", I'm failing to see how it is arrogant. I feel that I am blessed, and have said that a lot. Is that arrogant to say?

I don't consider "blessed" arrogant at all. Highly favored confused me at first as I had never heard that expression before, even in church. It struck me as odd before reading the explanation to what it meant. Upon first hearing it my assumption was that this person felt they were "favored" by God. That rubbed me wrong. The article I read cleared that up.

If you don't have any context, you're going to go by the dictionary definition of favored.

    1. regarded or treated with preference or partiality

    2. enjoying special advantages; privileged: to be born into the favored classes.

Yup, heathens like myself are not going to go looking for the church definition, and will instead take it at face value, which goes with the arrogant berk meaning. Especially of the call had nothing to do with religion whatsoever.

I don't think saying you feel blessed is arrogant at all.  It was the "highly favored" part that sounded arrogant to me.  If you are someone that doesn't attends church you probably wouldn't know the meaning behind that part.

We had dancing *gasp!* at my wedding reception. When we mentioned it to my DH's mother she said that DH's grandmother might give a bit of a side eye. She said it was because, "Because according to Grandma, Dancing leads to babies!" We laughed and my DH said, "Well you know what else leads to babies that we'll also be doing that night?!" DH and his mom have a pretty honest relationship. :)
