1st Trimester

After 3 nights I must ask....

Is anyone dealing with insomnia?  I have had it really bad the last few nights and nothing seems to help.  I tried benadryl, a warm shower and no sugar or caffeine all day.  I started taking Zofran (my new best friend!) last week but I dont think thats doing it.  If anyone has suggestions that would be great! Thank you in advance.

  • Yep. I went from unable to keep my eyes open to taking several hours to fall asleep. Insomnia was normal for me before pregnancy so I'm probably more used to it than others are. But still, it's a ***. Non-prx sleep aids don't really work on me and I'm not drinking caffeine at all. :-/

If you find something that works, let me know!

  • I have been having some very odd dreams lately which have been waking me up even though i was very tired.  Last night my brain would just not shut off so it was a rough night of little sleep.

  • I'll add mine to the bunch... cant sleep, crazy dreams, bit of uncomfortable cramping possibly keeping me up but regardless..It's like shouldn't I be feeling tired? maybe that will come later, only 5 weeks
  • 1/2 a Unisom sleep tab is safe for pregnant women.

  • I am always exhausted and tired, but it is difficult for me to stay asleep. and get to sleep for that matter. I had a friend suggest taking melatonin. It is natural so it should be ok to take while pregnant. but I still wanted to ask my doctor before I did. I have an appointment tomorrow, so we will see.

Melatonin is generally not recommended for pregnant women. I was taking Melatonin before getting pregnant and my doctor suggested I stop once I did get pregnant.

  • With all of my pregnancies I've had insomnia in the first trimester.  It gets better in the 2nd but in 3rd I can't sleep because I'm too uncomfortable.  I think it is the body's way of getting us used to no sleep with an infant.

  • I struggle on and off with insomnia anyway but right now I'm definately having a hard time with it.  I've tried warm baths, hot chocolate, benedryl, and even 1 tylenol PM (which now I'm worried is not ok but I am pretty sure I took them in my first pregancy?) and nothing really works.  I have been having 1 coke or tea a day so I guess I could cut that out but thats how I've been getting throw work and life with a 2 year old!

Tylenol PM is okay. Smile I take it when my insomnia is accompanied by a headache.

  • I'm sorry you are feeling the insomnia. Some things that might help are a warm shower before bed, warm drink (hot water with honey and milk maybe) before bed. Also, taking a walk after dinner will help you wind down.

  • I have to echo the no melatonin.  I have been an insomniac for years and was on Trazadone and Valerian root before pregnancy.  I had been weaning off the Trazadone since TTC and thought that Valerian root would be safe since it was more natural.  They are both Class C pregnancy meds meaning they are not recommended.  This applies to most of the natural sleep aids.  I have been struggling to get by on benadryl and completely relate to everyone's description of a night's "sleep" here.  It sucks. :(

  • In the beginning I was.  Then as the first tri went on the exhaustion was so much that nothing could keep me awake once I laid down.

  • Yes!  I'm so confused by it.  I had it with DD, but not until 30ish weeks when you're body is getting you used to sleepless nights.  I did NOT expect at 8 weeks to be waking up at 4am and not ever going back to sleep.

I haven't been to the gym since a month before I got pregnant, but I went for a run today to try to help me sleep better tonight.  You can take unisom or tylenol PM, but neither has helped me.

Good luck to you, hopefully it goes away soon for all of us!

  • I need sleep!!!!!!!!!!! I have noticed the colder I am the better I sleep though. I have asked DH to keep the fan on at night... helps some but not enough!

YES!  I was just telling DH that I might need to speak to my CNM about some kind of non-Rx sleep aid.  The other problem I am dealing with is that if I wake up at all during sleep, I am AWAKE.  There is no rolling over and going back to sleep.  Wish I had suggestions for both of us :(

So glad this isn't just me! I really thought I was just going nuts! If I get up to pee which I do every night I cant go to sleep! UGH! Makes for one very tired and cranky pregnant lady!
