My dd is 16 months and is nowhere near walking. She bears weight on her legs for short periods of time but nothing consistent. She still won't crawl and is not making any progress towards a stepping pattern. It's quite frusturating. Anyhow, my question is at what point did you/pt/ot/doctors decide it was time for a wheelchair?
I will always be hopeful that she will someday walk, but at this point it's not looking good:/ thanks
Re: Any wheelchair moms?
DS2 (2.5yr with CP) will be getting/should be getting his walker in August (he'll be 3 in October). They are building it now. The main reason I started going through the process of getting a wheelchair is because he cannot walk independently and is getting close to transitioning to school/IEP and as I was told "they aren't going to carry him everywhere". I knew it would take a few months to get so as soon as the school issue came up, I took the necessary steps.
I will say that my plan (we'll see if it stays that way) is for him to use the wheelchair for long distances (classroom to bathroom, classroom to cafeteria, out and about that may be long distances for walking like a zoo, etc.). He uses a walker for short distances at this point and we are trying to get him more used to turning it at this point.
my son is non-ambulatory and has an adapted stroller (pre-cursor to wheelchair). we got his when he was probably around 1 year. there are SO many nice ones out there now. they are bigger than your average stroller but more "mom friendly" than other wheelchairs. we have the kimba but i love this one https://www.medicaleshop.com/snug-seat-stingray-tilt-in-space-pediatric-wheelchair.html
as pp said, your PT and dr can really help choose which one she may and if it's a good idea at this point. my son goes to a special needs daycare and there's many kids there that do walk but have these types of strollers. there's also a stroller called the special tomato eio that is more stroller than "wheelchair" and can be used for kids much larger and the price is much cheaper.
hope that helps some!
