For those doing solids

How has it been going?  What's your LO eating?  How many times a day are you offering them solids?  Any changes in breastmilk/formula consumption?

For us, DS has been eating rice cereal off and on for the past month.  Last week, we introduced pureed peas (via the baby bullet I got from a baby shower).  Today, I pureed some bananas I'm going to feed him for dinner.  I'm tempted to try 2 meals a day, but I think I'd feel better about it waiting until he's 6 months so he's digesting it better.  Haven't seen any difference in how many times he's nursing, but I'm not expecting any big changes.  He likes eating too much to give up a feeding.

DS eats about 4tbsp 1-2 times a day. He eats 42-49oz of formula per day as well. Usually the bottle that follows the solids he will only take 5 of the 7oz. he is a beast though.

We have given him sweet potatoes (loves), snap peas (doesn't like too much), apples, pears (favorite). I have also given him pineapple and bananas in the mesh thing--he loves that too.

We started off with just one meal a day, and for us it worked out better to intro in the morning. I did this until we had a good enough "arsenal" built up for what I could offer them. Now I offer twice a day, morning and night. I do fruits and oatmeal in the morning, and a veggie at night. I alternate whatevers new that I'm introing. (Say I just did a new fruit, next I do a new veggie.) But only one at a time of course. (So far we've introed; green beans, carrots, squash, avocados, peaches, nectarines, mango, plums, pears, apples, bananas, and prunes. I have cucumbers, peas, cantalope, and honeydew still in the freezer we need to intro. And then onto other new stuff. :) )

So far rice cereal, bananas, avocados, and applesauce has constipated them. Beyond that we haven't had problems.

This, exactly.  I give him a fruit in the morning and a veggie at night. He eats everything but prunes (hated these). I am using Gerber food right now, but plan on making food at some point.  I also have a mesh thing that I put fruits in for him and he sucks on it (also avocados).

  • We started at 5 months with rice cereal, which we stuck with once a day for two weeks. Then we built in a second feeding in the day and added in purees. So far, we've done sweet potato, carrots, butternut squash, pears, bananas, and avocado. Her favorites have been pears with avocados, pears with rice cereal, and butternut squash. I've also found that she tends to like whatever I offer the second time around and thereafter. She's also had mum mum's and seems to enjoy it!

I was really nervous about starting at 5 months, and even more nervous about adding in a second feeding. But, I took it easy the first month and just followed her lead. If she was into it, we continued eating and if she wasn't, we stopped after just a taste.

We had her 6 month appt last Friday and I was nervous to tell the pedi we had already started. She said she was thrilled to hear that we had started at 5 months because recently she has found with some consistency that breastfed babies who start solids at 6 months have a tougher time acclimating to the spoon. She said she's had too many moms recently who have a tough time even getting their LO's interested in food because they are so well established with breastfeeding. I'm not sure how much I believe it, but it did make me feel better that I went with my instinct and introduced it a month earlier. She just seemed ready to me and was showing all the signs.

I have also found that she hasn't dropped a bottle/breast feeding since introducing solids. I have found that she has gone from 5 oz per feeding every 3-4 hours to 4 oz per feeding every 3 hours. She seems to be eating less more frequently.

    Good luck!
