Too much spit up?

My LO is 6 weeks old. He was IUGR and because of that I was induced at 38 wks and he was delivered 5lb 9 oz. Since he was delivered he has been a great breast feeder but he spits up more than any baby I've ever seen. (I work with babies a lot at my job and I've never seen anything this extreme). The catch is that he only occasionally seems upset by it. Usually with his spitup he just goes about it like nothing's wrong. But he will sometimes spit up several tablespoons a session, and several times in a row. He spits after every feeding usually 2 or 3 or more times. He also has been gaining PLENTY of weight. I think he's almost 9lbs!! My doc didn't seem concerned at 2 wk appt. I even tried taking dairy completely out of my diet for a few weeks, along with gassy and acidic foods...no change. I am doing a load of laundry everyday that's just spitup related. Anyone else's LO spitup like this? Is reflux always accompanied by pain and poor weight gain?

Re: Too much spit up?

  • I just asked about reflux for the same reasons and sometimes Lucas gags and the spit comes out his nose but he's not normally fussy about it.  I know I have a forceful let down so I'm wondering if that's the problem but sometimes the spit is an hour after feeding so I'm not sure.  My other boys spit but not like this.

  • How do you know if you have forceful let down? It sure feels forceful to me ;). My LO gags sometimes too and also has it come out of his nose. He also spits up sometimes an hour or 2 after he eats. So they sound very similar.

  • If you BF I would consider pumping and trying to feed him a bottle in a slow flow nipple.  You might just have a really fast let down and he's choking and eating too fast.

My cousin spits up a lot and like your LO is gaining weight fine and happy so the doctors aren't worried.

  • I had twins on the 19th and they BOTH do this!  The laundry, between sheets and outfits is driving me nuts.

I pump and use the Dr Browns bottles, but it doesn't seem to help.

I haven't asked the pediatrician, but I am also curious as to why this always happens.  They both get hiccups a ton, too.

  • I know my let down is forceful because when ds gags I pull my boob out and milk squirts in a stream across the room.  I can imagine how hard that would be to swallow.

I had the same question for my doctor, because Kaitlyn spits up ALL the time - totally here the PP's about doing laundry every day. I'm lucky if she's in an outfit for an hour without spitting up on it. I have a forceful let-down too, so I try to express a little bit before starting to feed her - it seems to help her not choke/gag on it so much, but she still spits up all the time.

  • My girl is exactly the same, she's like a little milk sprinkler. It's really gross when it's curdled. Bleh! My pedi said not to worry since she has plenty of soiled and wet diapers, is gaining weight, doesn't seem bothered by it and she's not projectile vomiting (shooting it many feet). The only thing that upsets her is she doesn't like to have a soggy face/noggin. Baby sphincters at the top of their stomachs are not developed yet so it's difficult for them to keep milk in there. I got a crib wedge from BRU (under 20 dollars) which helps a little when she sleeps/naps. I also put a folded towel under her changing table pad to elevate her upper body during diaper changes. I also put a bib on her when she is in her car seat to try and keep her relatively dry. Luckily this is not forever. Until then, lots of laundry it is!
