Perinatology consult?

Just finished having to make an appointment to have a Perinatology consult. My blood work came back showing I have a very under active thyroid. My doctor prescribed me an initial dose of 25 mcg of levothyroxine and said she would test my levels again in 6 weeks to see if the dose needs to be adjusted. In the mean time I haven't been taking the medicine this whole pregnancy and I'm freaking out and in tears about having to go see a specialist. I'm scared what problems this could cause. Anyone else had to deal with this before?

It's hard not to say don't worry because as a mom your going to worry regardless. I think that your doctor is just being cautious and helping to direct you through the avenues of consulting with a specialist just in case. Try not to think the worst just yet, it is probably all just precautionary.

  • Sorry about this.I am not in your same situation but I also have an underactive thyroid and am on levothroxine as well and I have been on the medicine since just before getting pregnant. I would suggest not consulting Dr. Google about your worries and speak to your doctor. Good Luck!

  • It's not abnormal to have thyroid problems when pregnant.  The baby uses your thyroid when theirs hasn't developed yet.  Six weeks is the normal time table to see if your levels need increased.  I've been on Synthroid for about two years for my thyroid but my dosage needed to be adjusted.  My endo will follow me closely after I give birth because that's another time your body chemicals go a little nuts.  The meds shouldn't really give you any side effects just make sure to take them on an empty stomach.  I freak out with everything but I promise it won't be nearly as bad as you think.
  • I'm not in your situation but I do see a Perinatologist due to high blood pressure.  He is extremely helpful and knowledgeable and gave me great recommendations on what to do and what not to do and explained medication choices, pros and cons.  I look at it as an added set of eyes on my progress.  I know it's scary but make sure you ask any questions you have and make sure they explain everything.  I wish you lots of luck, hang in there :)
