I was due 6/21/12. On 6/24/12 I began having some contractions after church. We ran errands and tried to walk to see if they would keep going. After about 7 hours the contractions were 3-5 minutes apart, but only lasting 30 seconds. I could still talk and was not too uncomfortable, but we decided to go get checked out and make sure our LO was handling the stress ok.
We went in at 8pm, after 2 hours at L&D walking every 30 minutes and being monitored the contractions had picked up and started being uncomfortable, but I was only dilated to 1cm. The nurse went to call the doctor on call to see if she wanted me to stay or go home a labor some more. She came back and was in the middle of letting me know they were admitting me when I felt a pop and gush of water. I interrupted her and said "my water just broke", she laughed and pulled up the sheet not believing me. Then she saw the water pooling and said "good thing you are staying".
Since I was strep B positive they started me on antibiotics. I kepy being asked about getting an epidural, but told them I wanted to labor as long as I could without one. One intramuscular morphine shot and 12 hours later I was at 5cm and ready for my epidural. My doctor had come in and checked me Monday morning (6/25) and said she would be in and out.
The epidural was horrible. I had not shed one tear and handled the initial injections well, but when they placed the catheter it felt like someone was electrocuting my right leg and I screamed. I was embaressed, but also in a lot of pain. They started the medication and I numbed well but could still move my legs, which made me happy. As I relaxed the contractions picked up a lot and I could feel more pressure. The nurse came in and checked me around noon and I was a 6/7 . At 2pm I felt more pressure so the nurse checked me and her eyes got big and she said "You are ready to push, baby is right there".
She set the room up and explained that since it was my first I could expect to push from 1-3 hours. I grabbed my legs and began giving it all I could. After 20 minutes of pushing she told me to stop and called the Dr. to come in. I couldn't believe it was time and my husband looked like he might pass out. My Dr. came in and after 15 more minutes of pushing our beautiful daughter was born at 3:16pm screaming and purple. We did skin to skin and BF right away. Her heartrate never changed during labor and she checked out healthy. She was 7 pounds, 3 ounces and 20 inches long.
All in all as a FTM I was so happy with how things went and that I went into labor naturally and had no problems with delivery. We are home and enjoying learning and staring at our baby girl! I will post pics if I ever figure out how to...
