Trouble TTC

infertility treatments, medication costs...

Does anyone have any idea what testing and medical treatment( clomid, etc) can cost if your insurance doesnt cover it?

  • I'm unwilling to volunteer any information for someone who hasn't told us what her diagnosis is.

  • it really depends on where you go and what you have done.  what kind of treatments?
    Me: 26  DH: 29
TTC since December '11 -- stopped BC
    No cycle for 3 months
Diagnosed PCOS/anovulatory in March '12 and started Clomid 100 mg
2 cycles of Clomid 100 mg - nothing
1 cycle of Clomid 150 mg - nothing but thinned lining
1 cycle of Femara - nothing
    Started Gonal-F + Ovidrel + TI 6/28/12 -- BFN
Started Follistim + Ovidrel + TI x 2 cycles-- BFN
Follistim + Ovidrel + TI -- 3 weeks of this and cancelled
~Break from the doctor, still no bc-- We bought a house and moved :)

New RE & Starting up again!! :D
    Prepping for 1st IVF cycle!

New SA:  DH has lower numbers across the board. ICSI added to IVF protocol
OHSS after ER in December:  Hospital for 5 days :/ Obviously freeze-all for our beautiful 13 embryos!

2 FETs (February and March) = 2 chemical pregnancies :(
    3rd FET= Twins!! Due January 2015
5 embryos left for the future

  • It's nobody's business but yours if you don't want to volunteer diagnosis info.

Clomid is very cheap.  A script rarely gets the name brand, you get the generic and I think my insurance paid like, $14 (5 pills, 100 mg each) for it.  You can't take it unmonitored though.  My insurance paid several hundreds in blood work and several thousands on MD visits with ultrasounds.  If you are OOP, talk to your MD about what you absolutely need done but don't take Clomid without at least basic monitoring.  HTH!

  • I havent been diagnosed with anything yet, why that matters I don't know when you're just trying to get a little general information. But after speaking to my gyno and explaining to her how crazy my cycles are(anywhere from 20-35 days, 3 months of OPK kits and no positive results) she referred my husband and I to a fertility doctor to begin testing. We've been TTC for almost a year, he's 26, I'm 28. He and I have no idea what this might cost in the long run should he or I need medication in our future to help. Our insurance will cover some office visits and some testing, but no treatments. So I guess we're just trying to wrap our head around these next steps and prepare ourselves for what could be next.

  • Google is your friend. You can also find a local RE and call and ask for pricing. Cost is hugely vaired across the country.

  • like I said it really depends on where you go and such. like a previous poster said, the clomid can be fairly inexpensive but you have to have the monitoring to go with it.  at my RE's office each ultrasound is $200 before insurance.  the farther you have to go with treatment the more expensive it can be.  In just a few months I've gone from the cheap clomid and scheduled u/s to injections that equal around $2000 before insurance and mean more frequent visits to the RE.  you may want to speak with your RE frankly about what you can afford and what treatment options are available to you at this point

35 days is a crazy cycle?  Well, *** maybe that's why I'm not pregnant yet!  Have you charted at all?  Never getting a + OPK doesn't mean anything....some women never get them  Did you test multiple times a day?

Yeah, ditto. And the fact that you are young and not charting and have not been trying a year = not trouble TTC.

And to your first point, OP - it matters because half the new people who show up here with "trouble" and asking about clomid and fertility treatments have no reason to be asking.

  • As of now I just finished my first medicated cycle with an RE. I live in the Baltimore, Md Metro area to give you a frame of reference.

I was prescribed Clomid 50mg on CD 5-9 my follies were checked several days in a row until they measured big enough to trigger with Ovidrel which I believe was a 250mcg syringe that I gave myself. 3 Days after the Ovidrel I started Progesterone Suppositories for the 2WW (two week wait) which I am in right now.

For the prescriptions themselves I paid $215 total. $4 for the Clomid (generic) and the rest was split evenly between the Ovidrel and Progesterone Supps.

My insurance covers 'diagnostic testing' but not 'treatment' for infertility. So basically all my monitoring and pre-cycle appointments were a $35 copay but my husbands SA was completely OOP at $200.

Hopefully this gives you an idea of what you may run into. Give your insurance a buzz and ask them to let you know what coverage you have for infertility treatment and drugs.

    Boy/Girl Twins due 5/27/13
