tips on getting baby to tolerate nose bulb?

LO has a cold and has a ton of boogers and mucus in his nose. He used to not mind the nose bulb at all but now I seriously have to hold him down to be able to use it. I don't want to do this though, I don't want to make him hate it or fear it even more. So is there any way to get him to let me use it? I googled it but haven't found any answers yet. TIA from a FTM

Re: tips on getting baby to tolerate nose bulb?

  • I just tried to make it quick when DD was an infant! I really can't think of a way to make it better. The only thing (really gross, I know) that I did once DD got a bit older was to let her see what was coming out in the bulb and explaining how it was yucky and will make her feel better to get it out. I started working on teaching her how to blow her nose early and she's finally gotten it now.

Also - I've found that a spray of saline in each nostril helps loosen things up enough that I then won't need the bulb, just to wipe. Not fun either, but a single spray in each can be much faster/more tolerable.

  • Saline spray helps a lot. And honestly, what I found to be easiest was to suction it while she was drinking her bottle. She is way too focused on her bottle and doesn't care as much. And it didn't make milk come through her nose. DH thought it would.

Saline spray and instead of the bulb use a nosefrida.

This!  My dh thought I was a lunatic when I bought the thing, but it works so much better!

Nose Frida is the way to go!  Quick, (kinda) easy and I even would use the words tickle, tickle when I had to do it!

  • LO's pedis didn't suggest using a blow, they recommended using saline spray and wipe it.

They said using the nose blow will just make it worse.

This exactly. Plus, the bulb syringe can damage their nasal tissue, the Nosefrida won't.

Someone bought us a battery operated one and I used it once mine was bigger.  The bulb thing NEVER worked for me.  You really might have to get used to just pinning them down.

  • Saline spray and the NoseFrieda.

ETA:  I also try to do it in the bath since she is so happy in there.

  • Another vote for the nosefrieda. I also do it sitting up, and he lets me.

  • Boogie wipes work really well for me. They are wipes with saline solution. I tear them in half because they are a little too big for such a little nose, and quite frankly I am very frugal. The wipes work better than solution. I hope you find something that works. Having a sick little one is absolutely no fun.
