Wake to feed before sending to DC in the morning?

LO is not really on a consistent sleep schedule just yet.  I guess I kinda have to wait til morning to see, but, if he's still sleeping, should I wake him to feed him before he goes to daycare?  If I don't nurse him before he goes, I'll end up having to pump.... but at the same time, with his inconsistent schedule, I don't necessarily want to have to wake him either.   I suppose this might end up being a mute point in a few days as I'm thinking we'll get a schedule figured out.  I'm just starting to stress out about how everything is going to get done in the morning!  Anyone that's already back to work that has some tips?

Re: Wake to feed before sending to DC in the morning?

  • I feed before we leave. She has been increasing to waking up at 5:30, so I don't bother feeding again. She has been eating at daycare at 8:30 and then I get called around 11:45 to feed her at lunch. If I feed her at 7 she isn't ready to eat at my lunchtime so then I have to pump. I only feed/pump during my 30 min lunch.

  • Yeah, I guess I would play it by ear.. see how rushed you are and how much time there is.  My gut instinct would be to nurse him, even if you have to wake him.  I hate pumping so I avoid it at all costs:)  Plus at this age he is probably faster as nursing now, so it shouldn't take too long?

  • I usually did with dd1 and probably will with dd2. They usually wake up anyway and if it has been awhile since their last feeding they're hungry. But i also have a 25 min drive to dc.

  • I wake him to feed him, and pump after. It is one less time to pump at work, and I get a lot of milk then. It is also really funto wake him. He is super snuggly and sweet.

  • I am starting back to work tomorrow and my plan is to nurse her right before I drop her off.  We have about a 30 min drive to dc, so I will probably feed when we get there.  I want to avoid an extra pumping session if possible because I HATE pumping.  She takes 5 minutes to feed and it takes me at least 25 minutes to pump and clean the parts.

  • I would definitely wake to feed. I'm sure your schedule will get completely turned around in the next few days though! I have no idea how LO will be next Monday but I'm hoping to feed her at 5am, which is when she has been waking up, and then again at IL's or my parents when I drop her off at 7am. She get's really angry when she's in the car seat so I know this will be a good time to get a last feeding in and also to be able to calm her down before I leave her for the rest of the day.

  • I've been back to work for 2 days. Day 1 she woke up when my alarm went off so I fed her and then pumped at work about 3 hours later. Day 2 she didn't get up so I pumped at work about 30 minutes after I got there.

  • My schedule goes like this:

4:30-5: DD wakes to feed- I feed her on one side, which is usually more than enough to make her full and go back to sleep. After she's done, I get up and pump.

6:45-7:15: wake her up to feed her before I leave

10:00, 1 & 4: DD is at work with me so I feed her at these times. Sometimes she'll have a few ounces of pumped milk in between those feedings.

6:30-10: Dd is fed on demand, and often times cluster feeds before bed

It took us a little while to figure out this schedule, but so far so good! And I definitely wake to feed in the AM- she usually has no problems going back to sleep and I love the cuddle time before work :)

When I had a 3 day workshop a few weeks ago, I woke her at 5 and fed her, then put her back down. I showered and got ready, then went downstairs and pumped. Then I got her up, and if I had time, I fed her some more before I left. She starts DC in 4 weeks, so this is the schedule I plan on doing when we start. Normally, she doesn't wake up until 7...but this is when we'll be leaving the house when I start back to work.
